Babies gone and Niki and Wade sick.

I went on vacation for a week and before then i was really busy, before i left i had lost 2 babies and now that i am back i have lost 3 more. There is one really big baby and i think he is eating them because i cant find the bodies of the dead babies. The five are doing ok. Niki, one of the adult guppies has ick. I went to Petco and they told me to put some aquarium salt in there and that should help her. Dosent that mean that Wade will also get it? hopefully this works and they get better. Another thing is, is that i thought Niki was pregnent but she hasnt had them, i dunno maybe she aborted them or something. Well hopefully no other babies die and that Niki and Wade get better.

Welcome back! Sorry to hear about the Ich. (none / 0) (#1)
by unclescott on Sat Dec 31, 2005 at 12:13:49 AM PST

100 out of 99 times that means that the fish have been stressed. Did you do a partial water change just before leaving or upon your return? Has the tank temperature been consistent?

You fry who disappeared probably died already of Ich. They may be more vulnerable than the larger fish and go first. Their bodies are so small or easily eaten (thus spreading the disease further) that they aren't always found. By now all of the fish have been exposed to it.

You wish to keep the number of Ich organisms in the water and on the fish's bodies low = at a non-lethal level. That means you need to take action on the following today. If you don't, their numbers will increase, the immune systems of most or all of your fish will crumble and they mostly will all die.

In terms of treatment, your shop is only offering part of the treatment. They didn't mention doing a partial water change of perhaps also 25%. Neither did the mention stabilizing the water temperature and then walking it up, maybe a degree every 12 hours until the tank is about 80 degrees F/ 27C. Lastly they mentioned nothing about a treatment. Call them and a competitor of theirs for suggested medication(s). If they have nothing to offer, look for a competent fish dealer.

As for the salt, once you have added a certain amount of salt, you don't want to just keep adding salt without changing the water! To do that would be to possibly poison the fish with too much salt!

If you added one teaspoon per gallon, add no more until you change water. If you change out and add three gallons of water, add three teaspoons of aquarium, not table, salt.

There are some excellent explanations of when the Ich organisms will be vulnerable to treatment in the Immediate Help section. Also, appropriate meds are suggested.

You may have already cost yourself and your fish valuable time by not looking there.

Good luck and all the best!

The fry are in a seperate tank so they dont have ick, i dont know if they died or if a larger fry ate them (there is one fry that is alot bigger then the others). I did do a partial water change on the adult tank with ick and i dont see the white spots anymore, should i keep treating?

Hi punk4life,
Can I just say to everyone that unless the treatment is having ill effects, don't ever stop ie. always do exactly what the directions say especially if an antibiotic is involved. Just because symptoms are no longer visible doesn't mean the treatment isn't still required as there may be still bacteria/parasites still present in different stages or less of them.

If you discontinue an antibiotic before the prescribed time you may well leave behind the most resistant bacteria which will thrive and become even more resistant to the antibiotic and next time you get the problem the antibiotic won't work.

With parasites you may leave behind the egg/larvae stages which will grow after you stop treatment and reinfect.

Yes. please keep treating. There will still be (none / 0) (#3)

some of that stage in the water, hatching off of the guppies. perhaps in ever small numbers and numbers of cysts - we hope. :)

The medication you are using will offer instructions. Those are not mere suggestions. :) If you are not using a med, still continue with the salt at the level it is at and doing extra partial water changes for at least another week.

Depending upon the treatment, 4 days to two weeks may be the period. You need to get all (or as many as possible) of the free swimmers. They will hatch out at different times over a week. In the responses to the Ich questions in The Immediate Help section, you will find great comments by Jbo and PeterW (in a couple of places.)

Bythe way, you fry probably will be ok. It is remotely possible that they took some of the Ich with them. More possible is that one's hands, the siphon tube, a turkey baster or water container can convey some of those wee beasties to the fry tank. Be careful. Watch them. Care for the tank with any illness after caring for the other. :)

Glad to hear of the progress.
ATB and Happy New Year!
