When i was in holiday in France in July. We visited a big well run zoo. It was full of healthy well cared for animals and the aquatics section was amazing. This zoo was better than any zoo i have been in in England.

Any way getting back on track, we were looking at the aligators which were lounging very happily in these big glass tanks with rocks and a deepwater part to it. As i stared in the water to my amazment i saw quite a few guppies. I thought to myself why put guppies in with aligators they are sure going to get eaten. But they didnt apparantly the aligators just ignore them and carry on with their daily lazy routine. But what supprised me the most was that thses Guppies were far the biggest guppies i had seen in my life. Well the males were big but the females were even bigger. I managed to see a pregnant female, and she was very pregnant. Her stomach was huge like a balloon and all the males kept following her. She was the queen guppy! Sorry but it just amazed me how big these guppies were!

Well in England in some zoos they have an aquatics section in the zoo. But in some they dont. I just think this one in france did because it was very big and too along time to walk around. They also had a very nice marine fish tank there will lovely fish and coral around. Also i think that the guppies were fancy guppies because they were very colourful and looked like the ones you get in the aquariums stores but they were just alot bigger!

The only zoo I've been to here in Oz, in Sydney, had an aquatic section too. It was right down almost in the harbour but it's closed down now for total restoration/reconstruction.

I haven't been to Steve Erwin's zoo yet but have a friend who works there. I'll ask next time I see him if they have guppies in with crocs or anything and if so, find out why.

Yes, thanks for that insight. I imagine it would be a little hard for an alligator to even see a guppy let alone aim and catch one and they are probably too well fed to bother with something so tiny.

The size of the enclosure would help with the guppy size and the fact that the water is probably kept relatively clean. I dont' imagine there are too many guppies out there in that sized area without predators also being there.

mosquitoes in the alligator's compound could have been a problem otherwise? It is of course possible that they were dropped in there for a lark.

I would think that alligator dropping would feed a lot of microscopic life, which the guppies might feed upon. There might also be scraps from what the alligators ate.

A strain of Daphnia has been circulating in the American hobby for some decades. Livebearer guru James Langhammer picked them up from an alligator tank in the Moscow zoo. I recently picked up a few  and their care is pretty much like the "local" Daphnia.

It is interesting what may be "incidental" creatures may be in an exhibit. I do wonder how they change the allegator's water without doing the guppies harm.

Do most European zoos have an aquatic section? Many American cities have aquariums which are separate from their zoos. There is still overlap in what is kept. Other cities include an aquatic section within the same facility. And I think that almost all of them belong to the same professional association.

Thank you for sharing about that zoo and their guppies!

All the best!

Were these fancy guppies or plain grey ones? If they were plain grey then given the size they very well might be Gambusia aka "Mosquito fish".
