My guppy is pregnant, but she's dropping little green like cocoons.  I thought guppies gave live birth.  IF you can tell me what might be happening, please do.

like unclescott said, moving the mother is often really stressful to her.
I had an all yellow lady I really wanted to breed as she was getting older, and I lost all the fry from her first two batches to REALLY hungry (and fast) other guppies  :(
So, a few days before she was due, I put her in the breeder box.  She also freaked out really badly, but I left her in there while I went out.

I came home a few hours later to a batch of the scariest deformed fry ever.

They didn't grow up (don't like to talk about it...) and she became overly slim after that, with almost no gravid spot, and never conceived again.

Also, before I lost my favorite pink girl, I was moving the fish to another tank after a contamination, and she dropped fry very early, right after that.  She, unfortunately, died right afterwards, and the fry which looked healthy at first have tiny tiny bodies, oversized flat heads, and swim like eels.

I guess, in short, guppies are horribly prone to stress... and it is killer on the fry.

I was going to tease and ask if the mollies (none / 1) (#7)
by unclescott on Wed Dec 21, 2005 at 04:07:44 PM PST

left the guppies any food. However, is there some sort of shelter (plants, plastic plants, rocks, large gravel, other "structure") where the guppy fry could hide? For more on structure and various breeding set-ups, see Immediate Help and the sections on Breeding,  Pregnancy and Birth and Fry Diet and Safety.

Mollie fry are larger than guppy fry and the largely vegetarian mollies are well known for leaving their fry alone. Those fry may be too large for the guppies to take.

Oh! Are your female guppies over three months of age and an inch long?

Sometimes a feeding of live or defrosted and rinse frozen foods will help. I have especially had luck with "worm bowls" in the tanks of livebearers well-known for cannibalism. See Food in General and Live Foods.

Another, nastier sounding, but treatable explanation is that your guppies have internal parasites, probably some sort of worm infestation. This is especially likely if your females are large and they have left no fry. Treat them and the tank with an anti-parasite application. Your LFS (Live Fish Shop) should have at least one available for internal parasites.

For a lot more on this, go to the Immediate Help links and check out maladies like Camallanus or Capillaria. One can get very involved with medicines called anthelmintics. But there are several commercial combos which will work.

I even picked up gel-tec at Petsmart and it works well for what I was looking for. The young man working the department was unaware of it's existence. Be prepared to thank whoever you ask and then do a little label reading. ;)

Please tell us if you are able to identify the cause of the problem.

Good luck and all the best!

Thanks Uncle Scott for all that useful information. My tank has got a lot of plastic plants in there and even a few of those low ones that are very close to the ground. Well I have posted a new diary entry about what i have seen today about my Guppies and i think they all 3 of the girls are pregnant as there bellys look more plumper than when i got them and also on 2 of them they have quite a dark gravid spot. Hopefully i will have some fry soon.
Thanks
Kristiansson

Geeze, I know how you feel, one of my main breeder females just had a drop on sunday, Judging by size alone she may have had around 40 babies totall, no surviors though, the 1 male and 8 other females hunted them all down... :( I came home later that day to find a skinny female, Ive been waiting a few days to see if one survived, but alas, not a one...

Wow! Oh wow! Oh no! (none / 1) (#1)
by unclescott on Mon Dec 12, 2005 at 10:39:55 PM PST

Did you move her, suddenly, while she was very pregnant? Those sound an awful lot like guppy eggs. A fish abruptly moved may drop undeveloped eggs and seriously premature fry. :(

I did that once with a female molly and she lived, but never dropped fry again. I really hope that doesn't happen to your guppy! I'm also so sorry for you, because you have got to feel awful about what happened.

uncle scott
The difference between veteran aquarists and newbies is that the newbie didn't know not to do what lead to the disaster.

yes, i did move her.  it looked like she had dropped to the last stage.  she was already pushing these things(the green stuff).  so i waited till she finished then put her in the clear square breeder thingy.  She freaked.

When i got up this morning she about 9 of the green things and 1 dead fry.  Did i cause this or was it something else?

Another question is that this guppy has been pregnant before, but never been a successful mother. Any idea why?

If those square breeder thingies are plastic, (none / 0) (#4)
by unclescott on Tue Dec 13, 2005 at 10:00:40 PM PST

one of the Guppylog wits also christened them the "little boxes o' death."

It is much better (not easier) to move everyone else in the tank than the pregnant guppy. There is a lot of discussion on related topics in the Immediate Help section (see the upper right hand corner of this page). Especially, as time permits in this extra busy time of the year, look at the sections on:
Breeding
Pregnancy and Birth
Fry Diet and Safety

All the best!
