I haven't tried any of it yet (thought I'd provide a link before I forgot) but he says it's written for newbies rather than those who are experinced. He is also open to comments and suggestions via the newsgroup.
Here is part of what he wrote on the newsgroup in reference to his Can I Keep It? software.
"I decided that to add stuff on
actual water hardness levels, pH, and temperature for maintainence /
breeding would make the application less accessible for those people I
created it for. My justification:
1. Relatively early on in the hobby people will find out (be told)
whether they live in a "hard water" or "soft water" area. Most urban
hobbyists live in hard water areas (at least in the UK and seemingly
the US) hence I concentrate on whether or not the fish will do well in
hard water.
2. Most beginners will keep their aquaria at a "tropical" temperature
of 24 C / 75 F simply because that's what the heaters all seem to be
pre-set to. So other than leaving obviously coldwater species off (like
goldfish) I didn't want to start differentiating between those species
that prefer cooler or warmer temperatures relative to the average
tropical fish.
Does this seem reasonable, or dumbing down?
As for something about ntirite / ammonium tolerance, that might be a
good idea. I know black mollies are more nitrite tolerant than, say,
discus, but I'm not so sure about the others."
