Tail rot again

I'm losing a fish about every two days or so again.

Yesterday I lost the yellow female, and there were no visible signs of illness.  I've noticed illness in a few of the others, and am treating the tank with Maracyn Two.

My other male cobra had a little fin fraying when I came home today.  Very slight.  I didn't know if it was a nip, or rot, so I watched him.

An hour later, there was a severe rip, almost the length of the tail, and severe degrading.  I put him in a sick tank, too.

I'm just confounded here... this happened in a tank that was being medicated for the last four days (fish were showing signs of dropsy, and dying) and Maracyn Two says it treats tail rot, as well!!

Is tail rot normally this quick and hard to cure?
I've read a lot of people here say they cured it...
I've used Maracyn Two, Melafix and Pimafix, and one of the green anti fungal/anti bacterials for tail rot, on different fish, and they all completely lost their tails and died within a few days.

I also lost a five month old fry in another tank for no visible reason, a few days ago.

I'm very discouraged at this point, and I think we've decided to hang it up for now, once the illness runs its course in this new tank.
I just can't find healthy fish anywhere!  I'm beginning to think maybe it's something I'm doing wrong?  I cannot afford to order expensive fish online, and I'm not sure I want to if it's something I'm not doing right.  Quarantine doesn't seem to work that well for me, either, as I've now had fish that don't show illness for 2-3 weeks!  My heater went out in my main sick tank, and I'm left with only a 2 gal tank with no heat and an airstone only.  Not sure I want to put the expense into fixing a tank at this point.

Re: Tail rot again (none / 0) (#2)

I must admit I'm feeling a bit the same way Jessica. I had very overstocked tanks but do heaps of water changes and the fish were dying, mostly of dropsy but occasionally with no symptoms.

They've died off at such a rate that now the tanks are still overstocked but not to the same degree. The fish are still dying. I've not added any new fish for about a year and lately I've had 2 fish die from similar symptoms to what you describe here and yesterday I discovered a female with a white patch on her and fear I now have Tetrahymena/Columnaris (still haven't figured out if this is one and the same?). How can I get this with no new fish introduced and after so long?

I'm sick of adding expensive treatments to the tanks that don't work and I can't get antibiotics for fish here anyway. I'm sure our summer temperatures are not helping. I race round doing water changes every 4 days and increase that to daily when the tank temps get to 29/30c.

Very depressing!

Where do you have your tank? maybe its not aggreable for the fish, therfore making them more acceptable?

I'm sorry to hear you're having the same sorts of problems... it's been so expensive and depressing.
I have one *beautiful* fry and that's the only reason I'm still dealing with my tanks atm.

(Does anyone know how to photo a fish???)

My tanks are in the lower level of the house, which does have a bit of temp difference, but I've never seen it go down more than a degree or two, as I regulate it very closely.
I live in the lower, semi-basement level, so that's where I keep my tank.  I have windows and ventilation and am not entirely underground, and I do regulate temp and humidity as best as I can.

One of my fish just developed a nice mouth and crown fungus (columnaris) and I treated it successfully so far.  But no new fish were added, and she just got it.
I'm starting to believe that might be related to temperature changes...
