Where are you?

With so many new faces here it is hard to remember where everyone lives and where you live makes a difference to how a question is answered in some cases.

So I thought I'd start a diary that can be added to the QuickLinks so we can find out quickly where you are. For instance, in Australia we don't have access to antibiotics made/packaged for fish.

As well as this, some guppyloggers know the best places to purchase fish or equipment and it might be near you if we know where you are.

Anyone reading this even in years to come could add their location in.

Cheers
miskairal

Oh, I'm in the South Burnett region of Queensland, Australia :)

Belmont, California (1/2 way between SF and SJ)

A few neat LFS in nearby towns, and a local Petsmart that's ok. I refuse to shop at the local Petco due to some very bad advice we got when we first started fishkeeping.

Months and months after the fact..

I live in Richmond, Virginia... 5-20 minutes away from two Petsmarts and four local pet stores.

I'm in northeastern Jacksonville, Florida. I have one pet shop about 15-20 min drive away that is open 7 days a week but it sells sick fish, and I don't always have the car. I have another that is a 20 min walk, it's wonderful  but it's only a stand that they have on this side of town at the flea market so it's only open weekends.

I live in a small community just south of Barrie, Ontario.

There are two major chain stores in Barrie's south end... the one is a large pet box store which has some of the scariest tanks I have ever seen... I think they got them from Wal-Mart :)

The other is the one I frequent... Aquarium Services. They take the time to talk to their customers, they test water for free and encourage their customers to bring it in. I have learned quite a bit from them in the past month or so...

but I also don't go in there on the weekend, anymore, either. Only Monday to Wednesday evenings when they are nice and slow.

:)

About two years ago I encountered a Vlad somebody-or-other on the then fairly active

 http://lists.aquaria.net/fish/livebearers

Vlad, a.k.a. Scott Lockwood, was looking for Endler's livebearers and I was able to get him a few. I figured he would be a zillion miles away and I think we were both surprised to find that he lived about 35 minutes away from our home which happens to be in the far Southern Suburbs of Chicagoland.

I remain active in the AKA, ALA, the Chicago Killifish Association and cordual with a number of aquarium clubs in the Great Lakes region. We miss out on "Lake Water" which is so useful in aquariums. The liquid rock from our municipal wells serves the livebearers well enough. We have an R.O. unit so water for some other fish can be fiddled with.

By the way, the more active livebearer mailing list in the U.S. now seems to be

AmericanLivebearer@yahoogroups.com

It is still fairly quiet. That first list took a real hit from an attack on their server, lost the archives and has never really recovered. :(

But it's nice to be able to palaver with livebearer enthusiasts on Guppylog. Glad Scott and Reza put out the welcome mat.

Also took DJ's suggestion and dropped by late to the www.aquachat.com chat room yesterday. The pace reminded me quite a bit of the About.com freshwateraquariums chat room during it's hayday a 3-4 years ago.

All the best!
u.s.

I am in Kingfisher, Oklahoma. About 45 min north of OKC, or any pet stores

Sorry to come so late to the party, but I though people might be curious where the site founder lives anyway. ;-)

I'm in a far southwestern suburb of Chicago called Joliet. Chicagoland has LOTS of LFS's, but I tend to stay away from the major chains. I breed a lot of my own fish (esp. Endlers) or buy them on Aquabid, etc.

Maybe we should have a "Who are you people?" type article on the front page?

This is amazing. I just assumed the majority would live within a 5 minute walk or drive from a pet shop.
Can you get fish antibiotics in Canada?

I live in Washington State, about an hour from the nearest pet stores, which are all in the Tri-Cities. Luckily the town where I go to college (an hour from the Tri-Cities in the opposite direction) has a pet store only a 20 minute walk away! Unfortunately they're one of the most expensive I've ever seen.

I am from South Central Kentucky and I live about 45 minutes from a pet/fish store.  There are two one north and one south.  However, the selection, quality and health of the fish is not very good at either one. That does not stop me from going every chance I get.

I'm in Northeastern NJ in a town called Parsippany.  I'm less than an hour from NYC.  Today the temp has gone from 60 to 30 degrees in 12 hours!  Winter is finally coming whether we like it or not.

There are 2 pet stores within a 2 mile radius.  The LFS that takes my extra gups is about 25 miles away, but it's my favorite.
