Feeding Care

Well, because I'm having problems with my Ammonia, which is affecting my Nitrite levels, I have considered if how much I'm feeding my guppies, is too much. I feed them a small amount of flakes, and 1/2 a cube of frozen blood worms every other day. I've heard that you should feed them multiple times a day. I've also heard that they should be fed only two times a week! I'm very confused on how much to feed and would like to hear what you guys feed your guppies, and how it has affected your tank. Also, I only have 6 guppies, and 2 frogs in a 29 gal. tank, if that helps you understand.

i feed my guppys once when i get up and once when i go to sleep and i have never have a problem with my aquarium. i also feed them a few blood worms as a treat every once and a while. hope this helps

Yes, that helps, thank you. When you feed them regulary, do you feed them flakes?

yes i feed them flakes when i get up and when i go to sleep also and same as with me i feed them a little bit of blood worms every second day. hopes this helps with ur ammonia and nitrite level

Thanks for your help FishBoy. So have your Nitrite and Ammonia levels been working well with this feeding schedule? If so, I think maybe the reason I'm having ammonia problems is because my tank has only been running for 1 week with fish in it, and I fed them 3 times a day everyday as soon as I started.. I have heard that you should start feeding them small amounts and gradually feed more. Because of my tank problems (Ammonia, etc.) I have been feeding them twice every other day but they always swim at the top whenever they see me since they're so hungry, and they always finish all the food I give them in like 10 seconds, literally. Do you think I should feed them twice a day and give them blood worms sparingly like you do?

Hey MimiGuppy, they'd come looking for a feed even if you fed them 100 times a day. Don't let them suck you in though.

I'm feeding my fish once a day now because my tanks are overcrowded enough without adding to the problem with too much food.

Your fish can quite happily go a couple of days without any food and I'm sure unclescott wrote that skipping one day a week is good for the fish.

I alternate between flakes and O.S.I. Staple Granules and then about every 3 or 4 days I also give them either freeze dried bloodworms (for the fry - but search out articles on Bloodworms before you try this) OR Hikari sinking carnivore pellets along with a Hikari algae wafer. The pellets and wafers were bought more for the corys but the guppies pick them up and run off with them unless the corys sit on them - makes for great entertainment!

Also, go to the QuickLinks and read about the New Tank/Cycling stuff - there might be something there for your ammonia problem. That QuickLinks page is new and we're still working on it getting the best links together.

I got some pellets intended for my yoyo loaches.. I was worried that they weren't getting enough to eat. Normally, the yoyos tend to push the guppies around a little, but the tables are well turned in this case. The yoyos find the pellets first but aren't interested in them till they've dissolved and softened more.. but by then the guppies are all over it and barge the yoyos out of their way. The biggest of the yoyos is easily two to three times the size of the guppies. It is hard to describe but it is hilariously comical to watch.

Thanks miskairal, I know I'm very gullable. :) But I think I'll feed my fish twice a day, small amounts of flakes, and occasionally blood worms (frozen). And I'll check out the QuickLinks page! Thanks again!
