Scott Lockwood said he could put a link in the "Post a Log" page for newbies

so they might know in advance what sort of information will be needed by you guys so that you can help them out.

I'm too new at all this myself but after seeing some of the questions lately and remembering how ignorant I was to start with, I think we need that link sooner rather than later :)

Scott L - I will happily write the page (if you trust me) which will contain the "Preferred Information" if that is any help?

So!  How about you all add in here the info you'd like people to try to provide when posting a question. I'll start....

* When was your tank set up/started?

These are the questions I always ask when trying to answer questions.

1.  How big is your tank?
2.  What are your water parameters? (ammonia,
    nitrites, nitrates, ph)
3.  Is your tank completely cylced?
4.  If so, how long has it been?
5.  What kind of fish are in your tank now?
6.  What is your water temperature?

Let's try to be concise - concise writing is better. Remember, you will see this every single time you go to post a story, so make it good.

That's why we're asking you "experts" what you want to know :))

Would you like to know if they test their water and if so, what for?

We can ask them for a whole heap of things (and bore everyonemaybe ore get the info needed?) or just ask basics.

C'mon unclescott, guppygirl, Angelee, maggie, guppyAdict, etc - you're the ones that answer the questions, what do you want to know?????

My 2 cents (none / 0) (#9)
by maggie1270 on Wed Jun 09, 2004 at 02:05:29 PM PST

How about asking about the appearance of the fish?
Is there any discolored markings of any kind?
Any white cottony substance to indicate fungus?
Is the tail or fins deteriorating?

Maybe I'm getting to precise.  I'm sure too many questions may turn some people away.

Hi miskairal,

I had told Scott I would help him with something like this as soon as I was done with a school project.  Unfortunately, during that time, my computer was infected by a virus, and I'm not sure how bad it is.

Since I am the resident computer idiot, I'm afraid to try anything that might mess up the site and send Scott into "Scoop Hell" cursing my name.

Until I am sure my computer won't unknowingly mess up the site,(Lord knows I can do THAT all on my own) I'm stuck and appreciate your offer to help with the site.

I agree with Scott that being concise is critical since I'm betting that anything too long will be ignored by most people anyway.  It might be easier if we work via e-mail to hammer this out before submitting it to Scott for his blessing.

My email address is: gates dot com 1 at juno dot com. As far as I can tell my email has not been infected, and I would feel safer doing it this way.

It would also keep the site from being overrun with back and forth.

Thanks a TON!!!

There is no chance of your computer doing anything to this site. I run bulletproof hosting. :-)

OK, Superman,
So it can only be the dumb human at the keyboard,
eh?
I'll give it a go.

Wish me luck.
I'll send you an e-mail if I get stuck, or before I really change anything.

Hey Super Guppygirl! If you have Norton's (none / 0) (#13)
by unclescott on Sat Jun 19, 2004 at 07:42:10 AM PST

www.symantec.com or PC cillon ,www.trendmicro.com,
I seem to recall that they will let subscribers get their computers scanned from the company site. That is a great source of comfort (and sometimes more effective at fixing your computer) if you get scanned from the anti-virus home base.

I wouldn't be surprised to discover that the other anti-virus people also offer that service to subscribers. Geo, Scott L and others could probably suggest sites which will scan non-subsribers.

Incredibly some people are actually using two anti-virus programs! (Along with their firewall. spyware searchers and even anti-spam stuff. I find the latter in need of work yet.)

If you want to test drive another anti-virus application, you could download a shareware (trial) version at http://www.pandasoftware.com/download/

More and more their updates are automatic. All of us need to be militant in making sure the upgrades were loaded. Also set your MS Windows updates to automatic. And check to see that these things got done... (in your spare time - heh-heh).

Then please give us your list here. That'll make it a lot easier on those of us who haven't offered suggestions yet. :)

All the best.

Did you allow the tank to properly cycle?

<Laughing>
Squack do you have the saying wherever you are "Bare foot and pregnant"? Your comment reminded me of it :))

I just wonder about using the term "cycling". I may have been the most ignorant newbie but I had no idea what that meant when I first came here.

Re: Asking Guppylog (none / 1) (#1)
by Lisa on Mon Jun 07, 2004 at 07:42:08 AM PST

That sounds like a good ideia- I would have liked to know when I first asked questions.

How about-
What temp is the tank?
What is the PH level?
What size is the tank?
How many fish in it and what kinds?

Also maybe a little side note saying try searching the problem on GL, to try to stop all the repeat questions. I have to admit I am guilty.
Thanks, Lisa

Thanks Lisa - I think part of the problem when you are new is that you don't know what terms to use to search for a problem and the terms you use might not cover all the relevant articles
