Oh yes, my largest female dropped saturday night.  She probably had near 50 fry....its unreal!

Hey squack, please tell me she/he never had a gravid spot....please, please, please.

I've put fish way younger than that back in with the rest of the females thinking they are females as they have a gravid spot. If they turn out to be males and impregnate all 10,000 females that I have, I think I'll just...uhhmmm...I don't know but it will be drastic. Maybe I'll finally learn how to get the courage to destroy fry.

honestly I don't know what to tell you.  This fish does have a light colored gravid spot.  Now its not big and pronounced like most of my felames.  But this fish also has a gonopodium.  I believe its a hermaphrodite....if thats possible in fish.  Has anyone ever heard of this in guppies?  There is always something new and cool to learn about w/ guppies:):)
P.S.  One of my Endler's became a snale sandwich today....Poor bugger.  He just got sick and died....no fungus...no signs of parasites....he just keeled over and died....the others are fine though.

There was a log here somewhere about "hermaphrodite" fish or late sexing out but I can't remember what it was called - sorry :(

I did a really good inspection of my female tank yesterday and nothing looks "male"ish. There are some who's gravid spot isn't very big but I'm hoping that's 'coz they're not pregnant. Unfortunately I found about another 20 (guessing here) itty bitty fry.

Sorry to hear about your Endler. You'd think that the animal world would contain animals that have bad hearts or diabetes or livers that malfunction just like many humans have?? Surely not all fish die from a preventable disease?

Mention may have been made of the (none / 0) (#4)
by unclescott on Sat Jun 05, 2004 at 02:20:52 AM PST

self-fertilizing hermaphrodite Rivulus marmoratus.

Is that really a gonopodium or just a deformed anal fin or velvet on "her"? Or are you sure it was her who had the fry and not a tank mate? Not saying you are incorrect in your observations, but those are questions which will be asked.

"Or are you sure it was her who had the fry and not a tank mate?"

Pregnant goat (called Mimi) due to kid in 10 days time discovered with new born baby she was feeding. I assumed it was hers and she became part of the milking herd again. I was very disappointed at the amount of milk she was giving until I went over one day 3 weeks later and discovered Mimi with yet another new born kid - still wet!

My brain just couldn't seem to get round this vision and my first thought was that she'd had twins 3 weeks apart. NO, no way I'm thinking. I checked all the other milkers to see if anyone had any sign of recent kidding - nup. Then I remembered another goat had twins near to her the last time. That first kid was never hers to start with, it was part of a set of triplets :)

And so you addressed the first one as (none / 0) (#6)
by unclescott on Sat Jun 05, 2004 at 07:54:54 AM PST

"Oh you Kid!" (1920s-30s American slang, NOT from my childhood.) If it were a sheep it could be "an embracable ewe."
