In my haste to separate the sexes here...

I accidently put a female into the male tank, which currently holds 37 males. She is probably about 1/3 the size of the biggest males. This is the tank that had the dropsy fish die in it so I have been unable to move her to the female tank.

What I'm curious about is that with 1 female and 37 males there has been absolutely no interest shown by the males. She just goes about her business of eating and they spend all day showing off to each other. I am greatful that it is one female in with males and not 1 male in with the females :)

The dropsy fish died 5 days ago, the next evening one male wasn't eating and was dead the next morning with no signs of a big belly or anything else. I continued the melafix seeing as how I started it and everything else looks great. Whatever bacteria caused the dropsy are probably already in the other tanks due to the large number of transfers I do - do you think it would be safe to move the female out of the male tank in the hopes she is not yet pregnant?

Lack of interest by both parties would worry me.  I've had females snub a male before and a few males snub a particular female when there were others around but leaving her alone entirely?  Wierd.  In some cases, the males will try to bother an obviously pregnant female even while they are delivering.  You said she's a young female, are you sure?  I've had a late bloomer fool me a time or two.

an obviously pregnant female even while they are delivering." As obnoxious and yucky as that sounds, they were trying to be the first to imseminate her. If Houde is to be believed, a female may mate about three times after delivering and after a couple of days it is no longer possible to inseminate her.

"Lack of interest by both parties would worry me..." Look carefully, were they both just having a smoke after... ;)

Hahahaha!

No honestly, there were about 30 males in there and the tank is right beside my pc where I spend as much time as possible and she'd be over one end with a few very small males and the "big boys" woudl be off chasing each other :)

No, not a late bloomer Angelee, she's got a definite gravid spot and judging by the increase in size/area of the gravid spot over the last few days, I'd say she is a pregnant fishy <SIGH>

Does anyone know of a version of "The pill" for guppies :)

organisms which would cause dropsy are in all of your (and our) tanks. So long as you keep up the water changes (easier for me to say than do) there is probably no more danger for that fish there than in other tanks. Probably she is not much more likely to be a carrier than the siphon hose.

As Geo suggests (smirks?) the "Lack of interest" by the males in her may be because they already impregnated her. While she may be too young to reproduce, you might ask yourself whether you will be able to ID her in the female tank if she proved pregnant. Of course if she drops and you let the females eat the fry, that is not an issue. Then again you feed your females so well, they have left fry alone. :)

Would your "silver sharks" leave her alone but eat her fry? Just trying to find a home for her. ;)

Re:Okay, Okay so it was wishful thinking :) (none / 1) (#3)

I'll shift her in with the females anyway.

The rest of the females will still be pregnant for months to come so having one dropping fry a month later probably won't make much difference except that maybe that Silver Shark will be hungrier :)

So far, none of my tanks have gone more than 7 days without a water change. I've discovered what an advantage I have here with the acidic rainwater and the alkaline creek water. I just test the pH of a tank prior to cleaning and adjust the fresh water to suit what's required without doing too dramatic a change.

Can anyone give me a rough idea of the length you would expect a 4 week old guppie and an 8 week old guppie to be?

Guppy production here is exploding. They'll be climbing out of the tanks and taking over our house soon. If any of you are able to put down fry and are planning a visit to Oz soon, please contact me :)) I just can't do it and even saved one the other day that nearly went out with the water!
