Ok I'm going to apologize now in case this winds up to be a duplicate entry.  I tried submitting this diary entry but it's not showing so here I go again...

I had to quarrantine one of my homegrown males Friday night. (my favorite one Squirt!!)  I noticed before I fed them their dinner that he was hanging out at the bottom and when I lifted the lid they all came shooting up to the top to scarf their flakes down.  He did eventually come up but he was kind of shimmying (I guess you could call it).  And compared to his brothers and nephew he looked like he was wasting away.  Plus whatever he took in he wound up spitting back out.  After I pulled him I treated his quarrantine tank with Parasite Clear since it may be some kind of parasite.  I didn't notice any difference by today.  I did a partial water change and according to my LFS, I would be better off trying Paragon.  So, here we go again.  I have a disposable water filter in his tank, so I removed the carbon cartridge and left the holder so that air can still be pumped into the tank while I'm medicating.  Would you believe he's swimming around the air tube that leads to the cartridge and he's swimming within the bubbles! At least he's still in good spirits.  He's still trying to nibble at whatever is at the bottom, although I don't think he's keeping anything down because I'm not seeing any waste from him.  I can't seem to see any other signs on him.  No red streaks.  No Camallanus (thank GOD!), at least not yet anyway. No visible blemishes of any kind.  It's a mystery.

If he is unable to swallow it may be Hexamida. (none / 0) (#1)
by unclescott on Tue May 25, 2004 at 08:23:42 AM PST

Wasting and a lack of appetite are signs that those organisms have proliferated in their digestive system and so aggravated & swollen their throats that they can't swallow food.

I too need to continue Metronidazole treatments in a tanks where this is suspect. I believe that they were already in the mollies I bought at a club auction, but multiplied when the fish were stressed by being dumped in a bag, toted across the country, put on an auction table and then carried in those bags for another two days.

There are actually several related organisms we call hexamita. They are fairly common, especially in commercially raised fishes. They also are not uncommon among hobbyist raised fishes though. Treatment is the same for the whole crowd of wee beasties.

All the best!

I'm sticking with the Paragon (none / 0) (#3)
by maggie1270 on Tue May 25, 2004 at 06:16:30 PM PST

Tonight he was still trying to eat, although I crumbled up flakes and freeze dried shrimp as fine as I could to make sure he could keep something down.  Well, I never thought I'd be so excited about seeing fish poo until tonight.  I see he's finally taking some food in so I think I'll stick with the Paragon for a couple more days and see how he does then.  He's not shimmying like he was.  I had never seen a fish do that before.  But now, he's definitely swimming around the tank and acting more "normal" than he was.  I'm wondering if this was a secondary infection due to the Camallanus worms that were in my tank.  Other than the 2 LFS bought females that eventually died, the rest did not show any signs and I think it's been a couple months now.  Or at least it feels it.

I also have medication called Hexamita (none / 0) (#2)
by maggie1270 on Tue May 25, 2004 at 02:51:50 PM PST

so maybe I'll try that instead.  I'm currently using Paragon, but maybe I'll do a water change and try this to see if that helps since he's still not eating, although he's still trying.

You are probably wise to stay with the (none / 0) (#4)
by unclescott on Tue May 25, 2004 at 07:28:00 PM PST

Paragon, especially if your guppy is looking better. Does it also have an absorbable anti-biotic?

Charles Harrison found out, inadvertantly, that the anthelmintics even were somewhat effective with Hexamita.

I haven't mentioned that or his original use against hydra (until squack raised the question) because after a while it sounds like those anthelmintics are effective against anything. There are a bunch of things which they aren't supposed to be effective against.

As soon as a product claims to be able to do everything except sing the Andalusian national anthem, it is time to be extra careful. :)

Paragon's Ingredients (none / 0) (#5)
by maggie1270 on Wed May 26, 2004 at 04:45:53 AM PST

Dimethyl (2,2,2,-Triloro-1-Hydroxyethyl) Phosphonate, Nitrofurazone, NaCl, Isoniazid, Neomycin and Kanamycin Sulfate.

I was surprised to see the NaCl in it, but then again we've spoken so much on its uses I guess I shouldn't be.

Salt is in almost all medicines. Maybe it is (none / 0) (#6)
by unclescott on Wed May 26, 2004 at 06:09:07 AM PST

used as filler to pact the medicine in. As we know, it seems to also have some therapeutic effect on the skin.
