I should never have said that all my fish were happy and healthy since I've been visiting guppylog.

5 days ago when I bought all the new tank equipment I also couldn't help but buy a catfish for tank 2. It WAS an albino ?cory (proper name is callichthyidae - found a pic in a library book). I've since learnt that you should have more than 1 but anyway, he/she seemed to be going well. Today I fed the fish some bloodworm about 10am and turned off their light 1/2 hour later. Got back in from milking at 6pm, turned the light on and it was as dead as a doorknob :(

The only thing I can see on it that is obviously abnormal is an area from it's gills to it's anal region that appears reddish, like it's had an internal bleed/bruise - I did not see this when it was alive.

Any comments from anyone on what I should "search" for would be appreciated.

Oh my, wonder what I've done wrong this time - I can't get the following into a reply to us so I'm trying it here. <laughing at myself>

I put the catfish in a bowl (clean, no soaps etc. and only used for the fish for weeks, this is how I've been moving the guppies into tank 2) and then take 1 ladle full of water at a time from the tank and add it to the bowl. I do this over an hour but then I released the fish into the tank from the bowl without discarding the water. I only read about that after I bought the catfish - about 2 hours later actually :(

I didn't actually see the catfish eat any of the worms - never had a chance with the gupps all in their, none got to the bottom but I know the flake and granule food gets to the bottom.

Speaking of library - there were only 2 books on tropical fish in the whole library but I can ask them to get particular books in - told you it is  a small town :-)

Off to browse the cory link - ta muchly, then will make the charcoal bag.

Did anything else die?

I won't feed bloodworms - too dangerous.

Can you elaborate please?

I thought it was good for them especially as how they climb over each other to get to them. Crikey all this stuff is hard to get right. I suppose I'll have to buy something over the net - any recommendations Scott?

Thanks

PS Nothing else has died or even looks sick. Only male guppies in with it.

Elaborate on blood worms?

A: Search the site, there's lots on it.

B: They can cary disease, and can kill fish. :-) Thus, I don't feed them to mine. :-)

If you adjust the catfish to you water gradually (none / 1) (#2)

by putting what it the bag or jar with the catfish and then tossed all that water out and carefully dropped the Cory into the tank, his (?) demise is certainly not your fault.
If you fed him a lot of worms, he died as contentedly as possible. :)

Callichthyidae is the family they belong to. That family is split up into two subfamilies. One subfamily includes the Corydorus, Brochus and Aspidorus. The other subfamily contained the somewhat larger bodied Callichthys, Dianema and Hoplosternum. One of the interesting things about that latter group of dwarf catfishes is that they are bubblenest builders.

http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/callicht/ has quite a list of these fishes.

While library hopping, look for anything by David Sands. He has been producing good books and intriguing articles on catfishes even long before he became Dr. David Sands.
