I had a few little black skirts that grew and prospered. They can also be terrible fin-nippers (fun-loving boisterous fish can never resist the lovely waving flag of the full grown guppies either). I had to move mine into another tank, away from my gupps. Oh, and they will tirelessly chase down any guppy fry and eat them. I misjudged the size of my fry one day when adding a few of the larger fry (that were chasing the smaller fry in one of the baby tanks)to the community tank. The tetras promptly snatched one up the minute it hit the water. It could barely get the fry in its mouth, it was so big. Needless to say that is the day the acquired a new home.
Most fish will try a bite of anything dead in the tank. But, I agree with Scott on the loaches. For the most part, they shouldn't eat them.
Regarding the plants, plastic is better than nothing. A cavelike ornament (although I fear the clown loaches will take it over in nothing flat). ANYTHING that can be used to shelter them from the larger fish. You can even use a floating log, can't remember what type of wood. Be careful with that suggestion because the wrong type of wood can raise the acidity. "The Rocky Mountain Gupster"
