When is she going to drop?

Hi everyone,

I'm new here, and I've had guppies for a while.  My first few batches of fry were completely unexpected, but now I have a new aquarium and a VERY pregnant guppy.

What are the signs that she is going to drop her fry?  I have her in a tank with 4 other guppies (3 male, 1 female) and 5 neon tetras.  I have a floating guppy tank, but I don't want to put her inside it too early (and the last batch of fry are still in it for now).  I noticed that the pregnant guppy wasn't too hungry for her supper today, and she has been quite competitive with the other fish.  I don't have any live plants in the tank, but I do have a lot of decorations and places for fry to hide.  Any suggestions would be wonderful!

Hi gaitergirl! When was the last time (none / 0) (#1)

your female guppy dropped? If their temperature is around 76-77 F. the gestation period is about 28-30 days. Maybe you can figure from there.

If your decorations offer places the fry can go and the neons and adult guppies can't go, the fry stand a chance of surviving.

Feed the fish as well as you can. Some (defrosted and rinsed) frozen or live food will help them lose interest in fry for lunch.

Please do a search for "fry" or "Pregnant" at the bottom of the Guppylog page. You will find a ton of posts.

I feud with that search engine quite a bit and wish it gave more hits to various key words. If you click on an entry, read it and hit the back button, it will tell you the page is gone. Hit Refresh at the top of the page and then retry when that option is offered. (That sequence has allowed me to retrieve an article I thought I had lost before it got properly submitted.) :)

Also look for anything by guppygirl on fry. She has the gift of informed common sense. :)

I agree.
It is a major pain, and not very productive.
I've been meaning to ask Scott L.,
"What's up with this Skip?" for some time now.

hi there, thanks for the responses!  Unfortunately, I don't know when the last time she dropped was, as a friend was taking care of her (and put her in her own tank with 12 males!) and of course she got pregnant again.  I have a very large fish bowl that is set up with a lot of live plants right next to my aquarium, and I moved her in there.  But all she does is stay at the top as close to the other aquarium as she can get!  Would she be happier with all of the other fish, or should I keep her alone... or maybe add another one to her tank?

Interesting question. What is the temperature (none / 0) (#4)
by unclescott on Wed Feb 04, 2004 at 04:48:29 PM PST

of the bowl? If the bowl is significantly cooler than the tank AND tank has a strong glass top, can you gently place the bowl on top of the tank? The bowl's warmth would be a little closer to the tank that way. (I'm an old bowl stacker. Yertle the Turtle lives!) :)

That is an interesting observation about her being drawn to the company of the other guppies. She might be more comfortable in the big tank, her fry wouldn't. ;)

Sounds like there will be an intreesting mix of fry colorwise!

If you can still give her a frozen, meaty treat such as some brine shrimp, glass worms or blood worms, she would appreciate them and be less likely to bother the fry.

Feeding guppies, as you probably know, is something of an art form. "Don't over feed, but feed her as much as she wants" sounds like double talk, but is a good thing. :)

If you have a little refrigerator space and know how to keep blackworms, guppies go nuts over them. Well rinsed black worms, in shallow water, can go for weeks in the refrig - if that is ok with the family. They aren't necessary, but are an especially treat.

If you do a search at the Guppylog page bottom for worms, you will get several hits. While most of them are about diseases, several are on frozen foods.

Now here is the goofy sounding suggestion: Go to www.google.com and type in " blackworms Guppylog " and you will get our comments on blackworms!
