Hi, this is my first post.

i got a male and female guppy 3 days ago,i think that she is pregnant so i have been looking at websites to see if she is.
Every site goes on about this gravid spot, she has one but it keeps fading !!

dark in the morning and hardly visible in the evening.

I have put her in a breeding net because all she wanted was to be alone but the male (as we do) kept annoying her.

is she pregnant or is this a normal thing that every female does?

Thanks

Guppybunny

Guppybunny-Much like many of the over-the-counter cold remedies, guppy sperm is a time release "medication".  Once pregnant, the female is always pregnant so no need to have her in with a male in order for her to drop fry again. 'Tis much better to put her in a tank of her own than to use a breeding trap.  --Or better yet, take all the other fish out.  --and better yet, as has already been noted, just keep some plants (or other hiding places) in your tank. Many of the floating plants are great for this.
On a related note, some lines of guppies are prone to eating their young, others are not. It's been my experience that most lines will eat the first 4-5-6 fry and then, having a full tummy, leave the remainder alone.

in the evening" is an interesting observation. In some wild habitats, most predation of guppies takes place early in the morning and as evening comes on.

I wonder if this is a carry over. Less conspicuous fish are less likely to get eaten.

Of course it could be nothing of the sort. ;)

Hi Guppybunny,

Welcome to the wonderful world of guppies.

When you are mixing the males and females, a good rule of thumb is to have at least 2 females to every male. This will reduce the stress that is brough upon her from the constant chasing from the male. By adding another female you will then be able to remove your other female from the breeding net.  Putting her in this early will only stress her out.

I'm guessing that she is at the early stage of her pregnancy.  I only say that because 95% of the time you purchase females from your LFS, they are pretty much already pregnant.  As she gets further along, her belly will get bigger, and her gravid spot will get darker.

As for the gravid spot changing colors, could it be the lighting or the position when you view her??
