Well, I have moved house, and I'm happy to say did not lose a single fish. I have set up my tanks, and for some unexplained reason, an extra tank has appeared at my new house bringing the number up to 6 :)

Anyway, getting to my question....
I bought two balloon mollies about a month ago, one male and one female. I have never had any livebearers other than guppies, so I'm guessing they have the same gestation period as guppies, which means the mollie should be due about now.

Over the last few weeks my guppies have been dropping fry, and I have two tanks with about 100 fry in them. A couple of days ago I fished out about half a dozen fry out of my main tank and put them in with the rest of the fry, thinking I probably missed some.

Is it possible that these are the molly's fry? Do all fry look the same until they reach a certain age/size? or do balloon molly fry look like miniature mollies?

The fry I have all look pretty much the same, so I'm just curious to find out if my molly had her fry, because I find it impossible to tell by looking at her.

ballon mollie fry (none / 0) (#5)
by jetta3461 on Mon Feb 23, 2004 at 07:11:26 PM PST

I have had ballon molie fry. They tend to be a tiny bit bigger than guppy fry. My advise is to put ballon mollies in a different tank so you'll know what fry is what type of fish. Hope I helped at least a little:). L8r

I have quite a few balloon mollies and yes, at first I believe the fry look very similar.  I did notice though that at least with mine, there were a tad bigger than guppy fry.  As time goes on, trust me, their bellies will get bigger.  Soon they will be the spitting image of their parents, so cute in such a smaller form!

Good luck!

move gupppies! Ever more applause for the awesome survival rate!

I love your observation about the spontaneous generation of additional aquariums in a new home. :)

Your question revolves around what the balloon belly mollies look like. I've never had them but am curious too if they would show the paunch and spinal, um difference, even at that age.

Are there color differences between your mollies and guppies? Black mollies usually have black fry. :)

Anyone out there ever have balloon belly mollies drop?

My mollies are yellow, so I would assume the fry would have a light colour.

I have noticed that there are are a few fry with their tails/spine bent upwards. I decided to cull them as I usually do, and fed one to my angelfish. I then had a thought that they may be mollies, so I stopped the cull.

I'm in a bit of a predicament now I guess, because if they turn out to be guppies, I don't want them to mature with a bent spine. So if there's anyone who can advise, I'd appreciate it. I'll also do a search and see what I can find.

I have done a search for balloon molly fry, and come across an interesting site with some great fish photography. I think my fry with the bent tails are probably mollies. A photograph of balloon molly fry on this site shows bent tails.
Have a look at this site, it's worth a look!
