New Fish, Dead Fish, Hurt Fish... mixed feelings..

W ell on Tuesday I was siphoning out the breeder like I usually do everyday after work, getting rid of all the old food, droppings and whatnot.. When I finished though I noticed I only had 5 fry left. I checked the big clear cup I use and it wasn’t in there, I counted again, looked in the cup again, courted again... then I checked the 4 foot of air hose that I used and searched through it, didn’t see the fry.... Totally started to freak out... so I checked the air hose again, and I saw it on the edge of the plastic,

I blew down the air hose and nothing came out... I blew again, and checked and it was beside a small rock in the hose... so I blew once more over the tank and saw the rock come out, I quickly searched through the tank, but didnt see it. So I went back to the hose again, it was still in there...

It had already been quite a while and I was so scared for it. I blew once more over the breeder and it popped out and went to the bottom, I took the small net out and nudged it with the handle in, it swam up, then went upside down and fell again, I kept bugging it until It kept swimming right side up... Then Yesterday I noticed that it was still swimming good, (Didn’t get sucked up this time) but it was looking slightly darker then the rest... Today during lunch I checked on it and saw that it is still alive, and swam around eating, but tended to stay near the bottom, and his tail has taken on an angle upwards and to the left when looking straight at it... and definitely is darker then the rest... I hope I haven’t injured it, I would cull it, but I can’t bring myself too... I'd rather wait till I know it’s done for...

Also yesterday my mother picked up my fish, she brought me 5 more gold fish (9 now) and 3 male guppy's and 1 female guppy. I put them in the tank yesterday as there water was cold, they had been bagged together (damn LFS) and had a 3 hr trip to me I didn’t bother to acclimate them in fear that sitting in the bag longer would be worse for them in the long run..

The goldfish automatically grouped with the others and I noticed something peculiar about one, He/she is a nice gold but on the tips of its lower fins are black, and it has one black spot the size of his eye on the right side of his head, between the gill and the eye, (kind of looks like a false eye that some insects use to throw of predators) The blackness doesn’t look like any kind of burning or anything so I think it may just be a cross coloring with a black goldfish. As of lunch time today they are all still fine and seem to like the tank, always cleaning...

Two of the Male Guppies has red/orange tails (looks like a sunrise) with black spot/lines on them. I think that makes them a snake skin, but as I am definitely no expert I won’t even attempt to identify them... (Though at lunch I found one stuck in the plastic plants I have floating on the top, so either it got stuck or died through the night and somehow got lodged...) The other male has a nice clear blue tail, but a white fin on top, so definitely no pure breed or whatever... I’m surprised at his likeness to the mother of my fry that died days after birthing.

The Female has a really nice yellow clear fin, a steady coloring right through, at least till the gravid spot (which is Fricken huge) she totally looks ready to pop... which is why I put the plastic plants back into the tank to float on top, that way at least giving the fry a fighting chance. As I’m not always around and I refuse to put her in the breeder with my other fry...

Speaking of which, my fry are 2 Weeks old today... YAY!

I gave away my tetra today though, to a friend who just got a tank, but doesn’t have any fish yet (Well he does now :p ) as soon as I put my guppy's in the tank he went after them, and I watched as he totally started to chew there tails off.. I couldn’t let him stress them out after the trip, and as he was such a killer and a menace to my tank I had enough. I told my buddy he isn’t good with guppies, but he said it’s cool as he wants to make a tetra tank... neon's and whatnot...

So now I have

3 Fancy Guppy's (1 female (PreHit), 2 males)

9 goldfish (5 gold, 2 white/gold, 1 black, 1 gold/black)

6 fry

Don't worry about the goldfish being in cold (none / 0) (#1)
by unclescott on Fri Dec 17, 2004 at 12:32:15 AM PST

water - unless they are packed next to the guppies as they were. ;) Goldfish, of course, "prefer" that kind of water. Cooler water has a lot more oxygen in it. Goldfish/ common carp survive pretty well in warmer waters, but they certainly don't need them. The best tasting carp are those from clean, cool, running water. Now guppies...

Ines Scheurmann, a prolific writer who has several books out with Barrons, has noted that difference. She claims that water at 32 degrees F/ 0 C has twice the oxygen of water at 86 degrees F/ 30 C.

By the way, if your goldfish were to drop to 55 F or below, you probably wouldn't want to feed them anything. Their metabolism drops way off. Food can actually rot in the gut of coldwater fish whose water drops in temperature so fast that they haven't processes it. Some good news, if you have a heater on that 55 gallon tank, unplug it and save it for another day. You've saved a little on electricity.

You mentioned the marking on one of your new goldfish has some black on it. If they are only about three inches long, you could be in for some entertainment in that colors (colours) tend to come and go before settling into their adult pattern. Maybe they're just bored. I'm enjoying your accounts of their social behavior.

Smart move dumping that tetra. If your friend is going to try a school of neons with him, he may want to get several other "firetails" right after the neons. Sometimes an aggressive fish is better behaved in a school. I've heard 6 fish. My friend Ines, suggests 7-9 tetras for starters. And take a look at the Japanese planted tank artist Amano and his schools of small fishes!

In the case of that most beautiful but scrappy tiger barb, schools become them. On the one hand, they are more "comfortable" with others of their species. On the other hand, they are reluctant to attack others, because they are busy watching to see that nobody else takes a shot at their tail. :)

I'm Sorry about the siphon injury. Those things happen. I've actually turned the radio off or turned it to a dull station (a noise  barrier) so as not to be distracted.

Just before lights out tonight, a Fundulus catenatus spit out a small shrimp pellet, which sang (pardon me, sank, I've got a cold) under a tangle of Java moss. They have been surprisingly fussy feeders and unwilling to follow many foods to the tank bottom. (Maybe, as North American fishes, they feel there is a North American catfish "down there.)  Muttering to myself. I really quickly grabbed a bucket and siphon. Didn't want that b.s. pellet rotting down there. (Can you say velvet outbreak?) Can dump the water down the privy in the morning and leave the bucket outside to freeze whatever is growing in there.

All the best!
u.s.
