Well my tank finally seems to be in order...

The Bloodfin tetra (though I'm not sure that is what it is, I’d still rather call it a firetail tetra) seems to have relaxed finally. Or at least it isn’t killing and eating the Goldfish (the only other fish he/she has access too). He tends to stay to the left of the tank though. Most likely looking at his reflection in the glass (if indeed they do see a reflection as I do.) He looks like his top half is a nice green in the reflection, but not in the water. He definitely looks mellower, and I almost feel that he is lonely, 'til I remember how he killed his brother. Meanwhile on the other side of the tank the 4 goldfish seem to be quite content, they stay on this side for the most part, playing in the current between my filter and the breeder, Swimming around each other as if they are playing and going from the bottom where they constantly seem to be cleaning the bottom (and do a good job of it too.) and then playing with the bubbles that collect under the breeder. As for the 6 fry they all seem to be as healthy as ever, constantly swimming around the top not sitting on the bottom as they were when I had my earlier problems in the first days of there life... I keep their breeder clean by siphoning out the excess food on the bottom and any skim that developed on the top every day (as the surface of the water stays pretty calm in it). I have yet to see any color development in them, but their tails are looking nicer and nicer everyday. As for whether or not I have any males in there, I start to second guess myself every time I look... and judging by a lot of the comments in here I am probably looking just a bit too early.. They aren’t even 2 weeks old yet... but day after day after day I will continue to watch them... (Just like a overprotective parent ;p ) My 55 gallon is nice and clean now too, though I have not sealed it, or scraped any of the old seal off yet.. I figured it might be a good idea to wait and to see what unclescott says... As he mentioned he was going to look into exactly how far one has to cut out sealant. Even if he doesn’t find out, I still think it might be a good idea on this tank, because the original owners tried to seal it before they gave up and gave it to me... (But for a free tank who mind spending some cash on sealant).... In other news I think I may have killed any Ick that the one guppy who died might have brought in with it... As I have yet to see a breakout and I have been treating for over a week now. I think what I thought to be further infection on my tetra was just me misreading his/hers coloring. As it has not changed, nor does it look like a growth, it looks more like it might just be its fin coloring... Well, other then that, I am going to take my digital camera home again and instead of trying to take pictures this time I'm just going to try to take some video... then try to see if I can get at least one good frame of each fish to upload somewhere... I guess that’s about it... I just wish I had a few adult fancy guppies to watch. I kind of feel lonely without them. I want to get into breading later, but ATM I think I will let the guppies go about their own fish lives, then when I choose to start breeding and I have enough tanks, maybe then I will segregate the sexes....

Yikes! Thank you for the reminder on (none / 0) (#1)

that sealant. Here is what Frank wrote:
The bottom line is - if the old sealant CAN be removed, it must be removed. If it is bonding well, and doesn't want to come loose, then it is
bonded well enough to seal.  Remember, sealing is the object here.  If it is not adhering, it is not sealing.
Frank

I hope that makes sense to you. It's kind of a judgement call. If it is holding well, don't mess with it. If it is loose or budges, remove and replace it.

That is a really clever idea with the video camera function. There is a guy with the Tri-Counties Tropical Fish Society (Peoria, IL) who is pleasently surprised by what he is able to accomplish with e relatively old camera.

And remember, you can't be too protective a parent. :)

All the best!
