I need some help in diagnosing a sick male guppy.

I noticed several weeks ago that he had the beginings of tail rot.  So, I placed him into my quarantine tank and treated the water.  He recovered nicely and it looked as though he was starting to regrow the tail.  Since I had some females coming in that I wanted to place in quarantine I moved this male back to general population.  Just one day after doing that he began exhibiting some very strange symptoms.  He looks healthy except for the fact that he is swimming in tight circles and loops.  I can't find a lot of information online about this, except that it may be whirling disease.  So, I am asking for the expert help available here.  I have taken a short video clip of him so you can see what I mean.  It is at:  http://home.ptd.net/~moose1/sickgup.MOV .  This clip takes about 20 seconds to load on a cable connection, I am not sure how long it will take on a dial-up.  Just click the url and give it a minute, it should load right up.  Any advice would be great.  This is one of my favorite males.  I had 2 with the same coloration and lost one last week due to a freak heater incident (stupid cats unpluged the heater and the tank temp dropped to 68 degrees F), so I would really like to save this one if possible!

Thanks,
Tina

PS - If the movie does not load for you and you really want to see it, just let me know, I will send it to you on email.

He looks fat.  Are his scales protruding at all or is he just a good eater?  Are there any other physical changes that you've noticed?

He is a good eater, but he isn't really fat or bulging, no protruding scales I can see when I examine him closely.  No physical changes at all, his coloring looks totally normal (or at least has not changed from how he always looked) the loopy swimming and not eating (which I believe is because of the loopy swimming)are the only signs he shows.  Anyone, any clues?

Thanks,
Tina

PS - Quicktime should open this file.

Hi Tina,

Are you able to convert that file to .avi or .mpeg?

Maybe.  Is there an easily attainable program to do that?  It came off my camera as a .MOV file.  I looked at the quicktime settings and couldn't figure out a way to convert it using that.

Thanks,
Tina

Quicktime probably doesn't want you to convert it so that we all have to install their program :)

At VideoHelp.com I did a search for something like convert .mov to .avi and got this Tools with MOV to AVI support. The one I'd try first is MOV2AVI and it's FREE! The screenshot looks like it would be easy to use. I can't see a size for the download though

If you have WindowsXP and still have the clip on your camera, you might be able to download it off the camera via Windows Movie Maker. This way you can download it as an .avi (not the default setting so check the settings in the program first, it's in a drop down box that is greyed out until you click on something else) or a WMV or some format that will make a smaller file (for those of us on dialup to download :)

If you don't have XP then you could download WinDV from mourek's site. This is a tiny program that doesn't require installation (just unzip and double click the .exe file). Like Windows Movie maker it will download the video off your camera in .avi format. Oh, and it's FREE too of course :)

I'm not real up on video stuff yet but I think that .avi files can be read by more programs than .mov files. The .wmv files can only be read if you have windows.

Good luck

Ok, I converted it to an .avi file.  It can be viewed at http://home.ptd.net/~moose1/sickgup1.avi .  Hopefully it will work a little better for those of you having problems with the .MOV file.

It does take a few minutes to load up, so be patient.

Thanks,
Tina

PS - the affected guppy is still alive and is eating.  :-)

I know I whinge about my dial up all the time and you are probably sick of it but that took 32 minutes to download for me and I'm jealous :(

You have a right to complain about dial up. (none / 0) (#16)

Whinge? I felt kind of guilty. That file was down loaded and I was viewing it for the second time when the second minute turned over on my computer's clock. And they suggest that DSL is often not as fast as cable!

When I've been exiled to dial-up with the old machine, less gets read. A lot more gets done around the house and fishroom while stuff is loading. ;)

All the best again,
u.s.

Quicktime isn't opening the file. What should I (none / 0) (#3)
by unclescott on Sun Dec 12, 2004 at 03:45:25 PM PST

use to open it?

Or is it because I'm browsing on Mozilla Firefox? I've noticed a couple of things which will only open on Internet Explorer.

Thanks,
u.s.

Try Internet Explorer or another browswer (none / 0) (#5)

I believe I was able to open with IE.
