Hello everyone, I recently bought a 1 gallon aquarium to grow fry. I currently have three fry in there, one being a swordtail and the other two guppies. I am afraid that it might get too much algae.

options crossed off:
-I don't want snails because they multiply like crazy and
-no Corys or any kind of catfish because the tank is too small
-no large shrimp because I've heard they eat fry

options:
-ghost shrimp, do they clean?
-pleco, is the tank too small for a one inch pleco?

Thanks in advance for your help.

josh

Maybe if you can get your hands on some platy fry?? Platy's are known for eating up algae. Mine do it, and I think that's the reason my first pleco died.

Just something to think about.

gardening crowd to algae control! (I should have thought of them!) They are much more fry tolerant than black ruby barbs, American flag fish and several other algae grazers.

All the best!

I didn't even think about it.  I have to add algae wafers to my tank for my algae eater.  I can watch my mollies peck at the sides of the tank where there may be algae spots growing.

Well generally speaking I'd say that a 1 gallon tank is small to grow fry in. I've tried it before and they don't grow very well.  Not enough space I suppose.   Anyway in a tank that small I'd definitely rule out the pleco as they grow relatively quickly when they get enough food.  The ghost shrimp theoretically will eat algae but I've never noticed them doing a very good job of it.  They can get pretty agressive too if they arent being fed enough or the tank temperature is too high. Bumble bee shrimp are excellent at eating algae (it's pretty much all they eat) but good luck finding them.   I've only seen them in one store and they only had them once (messed up order or something like that).   The snail population problem is an issue depending on what kind of snails you have.   Gold mystery snails are good looking and leave eggs in big masses out of the water where you can easily collect and remove them as necessary.   In a tank that small you wouldnt want them to be of the size usually sold in stores but if you know anyone that has them you can probably get some young ones free or cheap.   I'm not sure where you are from but if its near my area (western pa)  your more than welcome to come pick up a few.   I have a few hundred rambling around one of my fish tanks.  Or if you feel like paying to have some shipped I'll send ya a jar of them.  Gets rid of a few snails for me, gives you the kind of snails you'd want in a fry tank.  Anyway good luck with controlling the algae!  And don't worry about all kinds of snails infesting a tank.  Some types are pretty manageable.

You can purchase algae remover if needed.  But I would wait until the algae becomes a problem before you add anything to such a small tank.
