Hello everyone las night around 8pm i bought a yellowish white ram with blue lines and dots...ect.It has been doing great in my community tank, eccept for the fact that he doesnt swim around much. he interacts with my other fish and they interact with him. Are they really calm fish and dont swim around? Or is it just stressed from the move? Or does he need another ram with him?

in my tank i have:

4 guppies
2 platies
1 plecostomas
3 corys
4 bloodfin tetras
4 tiny neon tetras
and of obviously 1 ram

Re: rams (none / 0) (#3)

I've attempted to keep rams a few times.  These fish are extraordinarily sensitive to water chemistry changes and stress. They are known to die at a suprisingly high rate when introduced to a new tank.  They also need some specialized water parameters to have a good chance at survival.  Temperatures around 80-82 degrees and a pH in the range of 6.4-6.8.   These guys don't do well in alkaline water at all in my experience.  Awesome fish though if you can get them to live!

Try to do a search on the internet if you know why kind of rams that you have.  I have never seen these fish so I have no clue.

You are probably doing this already, but note that rams need warm 78-80 degree water. In fact, al least one party has recommended them as possible tank companions even for discus.

They do waste away, like some warm water livebearers, if kept cooler. If you like them, you might want to put a couple of them in your new tank.

They will spawn (if mature and in appropriate water) on inert rocks or in small flower pots, tipped on their sides. Make sure the flower pots are free of herbicides or insecticides.

Don't include the 4 guppies
2 platies
3 corys
4 bloodfin tetras
4 tiny neon tetras
in the new tank, unless you don't mind them living 25-50% shorter lives.

The neons come from wayyyyyy up the Amazon and are most comfortable at 72 F/ 21 C. (Cardinal tetras are better off 78-80 F.) The Corys are also better off a little cooler. Probably the pleco would be ok. The others would do ok with the rams, but will still have shorter lifespans.

All the best,
unc;e
