Why?

I was wondering, why does it take so long for fry to grow? I have had my fry for about 7/8 weeks now, they are about the length of a key on the key board. (the letter ones.) I just don't see why they haven't grown all that much. If they were platies, they would have been full grown by now. (mine anyway).

I have 20 of em' in a 10 gallon tank. Please don't tell me they are crowded! I know, that if your gup is crowded, it will acctually stop growing, but, 1 gallon per inch of fish. So..I should have just enough. Right? I hope I gave you enough info to answer the question, if you need more, please right in! Thanks.

The warmer the water the faster they will grow. Guppies in 80F water grow like mad, but it shortens their lives quite a bit and most people don't want to do that. Keep your guppies in the mid to upper 70s (76ish works well) and they should grow faster.

Hi there Ashley,

Can't help you at all 'coz my last batches of fry are not growing as much either. I can't see how 20 fry in a 10 gallon could be considered overcrowding. I would think there was plenty of room for them at the keyboard key size.

Could your tank have been kept cooler perhaps? Mine has been 1-2°F cooler over the last few months because it has been winter here (and that's gone thank goodness).

Is this your first batch of fry in that tank? I ask that b/c I was starting to wonder if it is the same as for my goats - the last ones born during a season never grow as well as the first born. I've always assumed it was due to a build up of bacteria and other unfriendly organisms and that the kids, despite being healthy, have to use their immune system more. Maybe it's the same with fish???

Cheerio

Hey
Yeah, Acctually, this is my first set of fry in the particular tank. Yeah, they have a heater, but sometimes, it get's really cold. Bellow 72. And that is the lowest number on my therometer. Well, thanks for your help, I'm looking forward to hearing from you soon.
I think it might just be the same with fish, as it is with goats! (Good thery!) p.S.my spelling stinks! ;)
