I have 5 males guppies in a 29 gallon tank, and two of them are fairly new. I have noticed that the two new guppies' eyes are all black, rather than white with the normal small black pupil.

I believe there was a log entry posted about this topic before, but I looked and was not able to refind it. I think it said something along the lines that noted that their eyes may become all black from anger. Is this true?

Re: Male Guppy Aggression (none / 0) (#2)

I was told that the black eyes are a trait that is actively strived for by breeders and that it is a sign of good breeding stock..  And that the white eyes with small pupils are called "Googly eyes" and are considered inferior fish by some.

Whatever. :-)  I got mine for their colours, not their eyes.

stress and disease. The best (actually worst) examples I can think of are darkened, emaciated  guppies shimmying in some store tanks. Discus darkened to black may also be very hard to restore to health.

Mimiguppy, I did a Google search for Guppylog aggression and also got very little. That surprised me.

Recently aggression was talked about in

Thanks for the help, I'm pretty sure my guppies will be fine, but it's just something I noticed and I wanted to make sure it wasn't the beginning of something.

I DON'T think that dark eyes are good. My fishes eyes got black about 3 days or so before they died.

Oh, ok. That doesn't sound too good. I'll keep watching my fish. Thanks.
