Hello everyone!

I hope you don't mind this "typical beginners question)... How many times a day must I feed my guppies, and how much?

I have to take care of a tank (10-15 liter) with about 10-15 adult guppies and about 10 fry. The owner of this tank told me she feeds them once a day, but they are begging like dogs...

Since yesterday I have an own tank, too (21 l), with 7 females (males will be added soon), they have refused to eat but since this evening they eat OK.

The females in the "guest tank" are pregnant, my own new females are pregnant too (they have that black dot...) but aren't very "big" yet.

How many times a day should I feed the tanks? I give them a small pinch of dried flakes about 2-3 times a day (next week I'll buy some living food). But they seem very hungry...  Can I feed them more often? I'm afraid to overfeed them...

I agree with the overcrowding situation, why compound your problem?  As for feeding, well it depends on who you ask.  I know a LFS that swears by once the once a week method.  In their own words, and I quote,"Whenever I remember".  Another LFS swears by 1X a day, fed well.  However, in my humble opinion, both are incorrect.  It really depends on the type of fish, size and age.  I tend to feed almost on the extremely well side, for various reasons.  Keep in mind that I am a militant tank cleaner however.  If you intend to feed fishy more, you must clean more.  (Ahhh exactly why most LFS stores may not want to err on the overfeeding side, hmm?  The rule of thumb is generally not more than the fish can finish in 5 minutes.  (I usually do the cut-off at 3 minutes.)  You see I may feed my fish 2 or 3x a day (3 or 4 for fry) BUt it is in small, even tiny, helpings.  Watch your fish, if they leave any food uneaten, it is too much!  BTW  guppies is right, guppies or any fish for that matter, will always act like they haven't eaten in DAYS!!!  Please feed me, we have no money for food!!!!  I would swear that they suck it in at times!:)
