Sorry, I just realized that there's a difference between making a diary entry in your diary, and posting a log in entry in the diary section...

Anywas in my 29 gallon tank I have five male guppies so far. I was wondering how many more fish, most likely more guppies or around that size, do you think I would be able to put in there? I am not planning on breeding and it has to be a non-aggressive tank because of my guppies. I have heard of the one inch per fish, but I have also heard that you should not go by that rule. Please give any suggestions that you have.

i would put about 15 to 20 fish maximum but dont add them all at once maybe three or four every two or three weeks.

There's a difference between "can" and "should".  15-20 is probably an ideal upper limit, but you can fit lots more if you have to.

For example, One of my 10G quarantine/treatment tanks has 19 guppies (temporarily!) in it.  Ammonia/nitrite is staying at zero, nitrate is increasing a bit faster than I'm comfortable with, but that is to be expected since the fish produce more ammonia while being medicated (or stressed) and there is less water to dilute the nitrate end product.

I was expecting the antibiotics and the fish overload to knock the filter back a bit and so I was testing the water twice a day.  Oh, and its got a maximum dose of coppersafe in it too, which is another mild bio-filter inhibitor.

Anyway, the fish have improved dramatically since I started the antibiotics.  I collected two other unwell fish from my other tanks to give them the benefit of the treatment as well, and all but one have had specacular recoveries.

Thank you for the information and responses. I was guessing that a total of 15-20 guppies, eventually, should be around a healthy zone. Also, Peter, from your post are you suggesting that I begin adding copperlevel antibiotics to my tank as I gain more fish?

Quarantine new purchases before adding (none / 0) (#4)

them to a new tank. 1-2 weeks will tell usually if they have anything nasty (with the exception of internal worms). If you have the resources, hit them with either a salt bath or a broad spectrum bactericide, as per instructions, the first week. (Save the copper for killing unwanted trees stumps.)

Completely change out the water after that first week and replace it from the same tank you used to fill the quarantine tank in the first place. Then administer a dewormer.

If the fish are healthy after the second week, you can be 95+ % sure that they are disease free and will not bring anything into the tank. Welcome them to the community of healthy fish. :)

Why don't the better shops do that? Because the fish would cost so much more. And their competators love selling you new cheap fish every month.

All the best,
uncle grumpy
