bad news after vacation

It seems that no matter what precautions you take prior to leaving for vacation, surprises (good or bad) always seem to arise.

I cleaned both tanks thoroughly (or so I thought) and added vacation tablets to both my community and fry tanks.  A friend checked on them after 1 week and I had lost a molly.  He said that there were no visible signs of disease and since he has a fish tank as well he knows what to look for.  By the time I got back yet another week later, my big daddy molly was favoring his right fin.  On that same side it looks like some of his coloring was lost, although it doesn't look like he lost any scales.  I guess that's what I get for going on vacation without them. 8(

Had a problem with those feeding tablets too... (none / 0) (#13)
by guppygal84 on Sat Jan 17, 2004 at 10:48:26 PM PST

I live in a dorm, so when i go home for the weekend or for thanksgiving I have to leave the fish here.  I've had success with them most of the time.  However, I did have one turn into a globby thin with something growing off of it... the growing stuff looked like stringy snot... it spread from that tablet to the fish waste that was in there.  Thankfully Fez survived... Poor kiddo... I felt really bad for him!

Aww, I know how you feel (none / 0) (#12)

There was one time when I hadn't had a heater yet, and my dad turned off the heat when we left for vacation and the house was FREEZING when we got home, but luckily, I don't think any of them died while I was gone.

Bummer, I hate when that happens. (none / 0) (#7)

I know I'll eventually have to leave mine with someone when I go on vacation. Rats!

of going out of town for a week or so, but when honeymoon time comes this summer, i won't have no other choice, i'll have to teach someone to feed them once a day, they won't as much as when i'm around but they'll be getting something at least.

I just did the honeymoon thing this past August (none / 0) (#4)

and everyone survived ok then.  My big daddy balloon molly is still acting like he's stuggling.  It's so heartbreaking coming home to that.

Good luck with your wedding!

...."that's what I get for going on vacation without them."

You're pretty lucky to have only lost one, and had one other injured, I thought it would be worse when I read the title.

OH, the stories I could tell about going away and leaving my little finned friends behind!!!!!

Take care,

gg

Sorry there would be any casualty Maggie while you (none / 0) (#2)

were gone. Fry, because they are so small, are hard sometimes to keep going. That is why people cram as many plants into the tank as they can. Hopefully the fry can forage rotifers from the plants.

Sometimes we clean up a tank so dramatically that we actually stress the fish by suddenly altering the tank. (Have been victim of a couple of jokes - (loud voice from the fish room) "WHAT WAS THAT?")

I have a question for any readers. Do those vacation foods actually do what they are supposed to do? They probably keep some fish entertained. They certainly do look like they would had a lot of mineral to the tank (calcium? bicarbonate? plaster of Paris? what is in them?) Do they actually have enough food, unspoiled, to make a difference?

If one is going away from a tank for a couple of days, probably the best way to deal with it, is to be as faithful as one can with feeding and water changing a week or two before one leaves. Then just leave the tank! If the tank was fine before one left, it should be fine when one returns. (GG and I both have our war stories of fish sitters.)

The one caveat I have about that is that the house's air conditioning or heating system must be left set so that extreme weather will not overhead or chill the tank(s). Before we drove away for the Pacific Northwest three weeks one summer, we did separate some genders where fish might get severely harassed. The weather was very hot while we were gone. No casualties, but a huge electric bill greeted us upon our return.

My fry actually survived well while I was gone (none / 0) (#10)

It was my 20 gal community tank that seems to have suffered.

I've used smaller 3 days feeders in the past for weekend trips and they have been fully disolved by the the time we get home on Sunday.  These feeders were a different brand than what I normally use and they were only suppose to be a 7 day feeder which is why I only had my sitter check once after 1 week so he could throw another in.  By the end of our 2nd week we came home and there was still a little bit left so I think some may work better than others.

The tank looked very clean though.  Must be they foraged around pretty good while I was gone.  I think in the future I will have my sitter check more often while we're gone since some feeders do not disolve properly and I have no clue how to choose the right kind (if there is one...)

I don't know if those vacation feeders... (none / 0) (#5)
by guppygirl on Tue Jan 06, 2004 at 01:03:11 PM PST

have gotten any better, but I remember WAY,WAY back putting in a large one (to last a week) and went away.

When I got home, there was this mound of disolved white gunk where the tablet had been, and many casualties.

Never used 'em again.
