Dropsy will never die

I am so upset!  I do gravel changes every other weekend and water changes on the opposite weekends.  I can't keep that darn tank any cleaner.  I even clean out the filter when I do gravel  changes because I've found that it  cloggs up with "junk".  My big daddy balloon molly was acting funny when we got back from vacation on Jan 4th but I left the light on and used a vacation feeder so I thought maybe the stress of the light and an odd food source was the problem.  I left the light off for almost a week and I gravel syphoned the tank and he started acting fine again.

I had noticed that he lost a tad bit of color (he's a dalmation) and he looked a little more pudgy which, being a balloon molly, I thought it was just because they were back on flake food and such.  Well, 3 weeks later, I got up on Monday and I noticed that we was stuck to the filter tube.  I thought he was dead but he was still struggling.  I pulled him out so he's by himself and he's getting bigger and his scales are now protruding.  I've been treating him with Maracyn II but I think it may be too late.  The last time I lost a fish was sometime back in December so I thought cleaning and treating the tank was sufficient but I'm thinking of boiling the stone and starting over with the artificial stuff anyway.  It's so depressing..  He's like a lion king who's lost his throne... 8(

Dropsy bummer.  Sorry about your outbreak.  Yikes!  Have you tried anything other than Marycin Two?  Many times after acquiring a disease, in this case dropsy, the fish can get a second bacterial infection on top of it (I know painfully from personal experience).  You may need to add Coppersafe (which is their recommendation anyway or Maracyn, look on the directions)to battle that.  If you don't want to do that maybe a serious bath in the stuff will work if the outbreak is bad enough.  I had to do this, this time.  Keep me posted.  (Misery loves company.  We'll get thru this, it happens occasionally.  Which is why eventually only the diehards remain in the hobby.)

I've been using Coppersafe in my water additions per my LFS who usuallys it faithfully.  I've been using Maracyn II for 6 days now, and upon my turning on the lights this morning, was actually attempting to swim a little, which is a big deal since for 5 days he's been laying at the bottom only breathing unless I shake him a little.  I don't know if this is an improvement or if I'm wishfull thinking, but he's a fighter so I will do a 2nd round of the meds per the box instructions.  So far, I haven't had any other outbreaks (as of yet anyway).  Thanks for the company...

     Maggie,
I see that you're online too.  Have you tried some serious water changes and then adding the medicine? (over 70%)  I know what the LFS says but, what have you got to lose?

Well, the Maracyn II calls for a 25% water change after the 5 days of treatment.  Do you think I should keep changing the water daily while I'm medicating? I'm at a loss.

No wait til the fifth day unless the water gets obnoxious and you just can't stand it anymore.  (Militant gravel vauumer.  I think it's a obsessive compulsive disorder thing or something. (snicker))  Just make sure the carbon is gone and I change the filter and carbon at day 5, not just the water.  I don't want any left over contamination in the filter.

Well, I did a gravel syphon this past weekend along with a water change after the 1st treatment so the tank should be ok for now.

Well, I came home from work and my big daddy had already past.  His stomach went down though over the last couple of days.  I was hoping maybe I caught it in time.  He was even swimming a little big more.  Poor guy, at least he's not suffering, right?  8(

I'm sorry Maggie.  Sometimes no matter what we do, we can't save them.  At least you didn't give up on him.  Just keep up with what you're doing and hopefully no more of your friends will hve thhe same fate.  You'll have nipped the Dropsy in the bud.

This was a sad one.  He was the king of his tank.  The tank looks so weird without him...  I have an "older teenage" male that I was thinking about keeping anyways.  I guess my mind is made up now.

Maybe I am cleaning too much (none / 0) (#2)
by maggie1270 on Fri Jan 30, 2004 at 12:14:31 PM PST

But my mollies dirty that tank horrible. Maybe I'll clean the filter on the days that I do the 25% water change.

Thanks
Maggie

You need a timer for your lights. When you clean your filter you should hold off on a water change for that day,you can mess up your bio.

Dropsy.  It's a disease where the internal organs of a fish stop working and cause the body to fill up with fluids, causing the scales to protrude as the fish "fills up".  It usually causes death, although my fish has been hanging in here over a week so maybe, just maybe, I've caught it in time.
