hello i just wanted to know...?

what is your tank setup, how many(and for what purpose),filtration, live plants(if any).Do you keep males and females together, tank mates. What kind of guppies are you breeding...and what is your personal technique(ex. take you favorite male and female and put them together.and how long do you keep the two or trio together?

i know some are dumb question but on some sites it says to do some weird techniques

Strategy? Tank set up (none / 0) (#12)
by Angelee on Tue Jan 27, 2004 at 10:25:58 AM PST

I have several, much to my husbands chagrin. Apparantly not the only one , huh Scott?  I have a 55 gallon that houses a young featherfin cat, a few black skirts and neons, a couple of gouramis, and an african dwarf frog.  I am in the process of acquiring a few congo tet's however. It has several live plants, (cobomba, water sprite, grass , swords and some java moss).  It has a few ornaments, a bubbler waterfall etc. as well.  I want some money wort for it, too.  I also have a 29 gallon that houses gupps, It has ornaments and live plants in it.  A small cavish ornament that the babies LOVE.  I want to get water hyacinth or some flowery floater but, alas.. it's winter.  This tank houses males and females.  I ahave a 10 that houses strictly newborn fry, another 10 that houses separated fry females and one in the wait for separated males (of which I have two fry that look like they will be males) (FINALLY).  All of the tanks have live plants and ornaments.  I have been informed that aquiring any more tanks will result in divorce, and/or gouging of my eyes.  So, I think I may be done,...for now.

i only have three and i've heard rumors like that myself, lol, i told my wife that when we get a house, i will definately have a room only for guppies, she just don't want any more tanks in our bedroom. but i am gonna get her a betta, so just one more small one, ;p.

my set ups are: 3gal, fake plants and gravel, used as a hospital/quarantine/mating tank. 39gal community tank, amazon sword and horwwort plants, has guppies, yoyo's and one otto left, oh and some ghost shrimp. and a 10gal for fry and selective females, and baby ghost shrimp, with fake plants and gravel.

They were suppossed to be feeders, you know.  Then I bought my big lady guppy and they started dissappearing one by one, I think she may have had help from the catfish however.  When I had the frog housed with the gupps I thought she was going to pick him death.  She thought his spots were food,.. either that or she was just bored.

I'm in Joliet, and parttimer and unclescott are around too... We should start our own guppy club, for real.

I have a friend going to Lewis U.  That's in Joliet right?

I'm from Aurora actually, but I'm in college right now, downstate, near U of I... So we might have a problem with transportation! :)

Hey NGB, you didn't know, (5.00 / 1) (#10)
by guppygirl on Sun Jan 25, 2004 at 03:53:20 AM PST

you were posting in a board where MANY hail from the Windy City area, now did ya?

I'm from Upstate NY, so I have No Clue where you are all talking about, so I will answer your question.  How's that?

Currently I have three tanks, one is a quaranteen, one is a 40g hex, the other is a custom-jobbie that's 25g.

I've always kept males from females, and would separate them as soon as I could sex them.

My breedng strategy(if you want to call it one) was to put two together (at least 6 months old) that I liked(had the "best" of what trait I was aiming for)into a smaller, like 2gal set up.
I called it the "Honeymoon Suite".

Once I was sure the female was pregnant, I would remove the male, (send him back to his buddies to brag) and keep the female in her own little "digs".  This would prevent another male from getting any second chances. ;o)

Then I'd spoil her rotten, and start the countdown.  Once she had her fry, she'd go back in with the girls, and the tank would become the "nursery".  Once I could sex the babies they
would get separated, and the whole process would start over again.

As far as plants, I like live, but have a problem with those in my tall hex, not getting enough light, and having my clown loaches constantly uprooting them.

Right now the hex is a Community tank, the 25 gal. is becoming one, with the added intention of breeding swordtails, and then there's my Q tank.
I keep two smaller plastic ones at the ready that I can whip up in seconds if I need a hospital or isolation tank.  Also in case I thin out my tanks again, and want to do "one more" guppy pairing.
I have some purples that I'm thinking about putting together in the spring.

As soon as I get the time, I will post some photos to my album on ImageStation of my tanks.
I guess I would call them "decorative" features in my home, and a lot of enjoyment for me.

I hope this is what you were interested in.
Usually everyone loves to "talk tanks", I'm sure they'll chime in as soon as they have you mapped out on their radar. ;o)

Take care,

gg
:o)
