I found (at least here in Northern NJ) that my tank seems to look better and my fish act better when I use filtered tap water rather than stuff like AquaSafe or boiling water. What does everyone else do?  Any opinions?

i was thinking... (none / 0) (#5)

of getting one of those filters myself, but read that it removes chloramine odors but not chloramine itself, so i didn't get it.

that way Red. If something like sodium thiosulphate is put into chlorimine, it will get rid of the chlorine. But it will release a lot of free ammonia into the tank.

That's why we have to know what the water department is putting into the water.

Depends on the filter. (none / 0) (#6)

The more you spend on it, the more it takes out.

If you RO filter, or deionize your water (none / 0) (#4)

you will need to 're make' the water.

I use tap water, but leave it sit... (none / 0) (#3)

seasoned for a around 4 days, covered.  This way I can be sure it removed the chlorine, and I don't use the tap water first thing in the morning,  too much mineral build up.

britta  water filter.  I've tested the water befoee adding it to my tank and the levels are better  than normal tap water.  I've been told by a couple different fish stores that NJ has very hard water and to add to it has numerous chemicals as well.  I've been experimenting with Aqua Safe and filtering and I've been trying to do some research t6o see what other people are doing.  My friend just adds normal tap water that has sat for a day or so.  One other adds tap water immediately and no one is suffering any losses.  The LFS says one thing, frinds say another.  Live and learn maybe?

What is you tap filter supposed to take out? (none / 0) (#1)

What is the filter material in it?

New Jersey has been home to a number of legendary aquarists. Part of it was they had such good water for spawning and raising many species of fish. Part of it of course is that they were just good people and hard workers.

Wasn't it Thomas Edison who contended that 98% of inspiration was perspiration?

Thanks,

water with a Brita water filter. Does it have charcoal in it to remove chlorine and some chemicals? Is it a mechanical filter with tiny (one micron) holes?

One of the Brita ads talks about an electrical element. Is that in the filter or in the gizmo that checks whether the filter element is used up in either the faucet or pitcher filter?
