I have a question about baby guppies...

A few weeks ago, I bought a pair of guppies, thinking that I could handle the responsibilities of caring for the babies.  I would love to keep as many tanks as it does to care and raise for each of them, but I'm a full-time student.  I have 2 tanks that are dedicated to the guppies right now (one is empty and waiting for the babies), but what should I do after they're grown?  I've called a few places, but they've said they only buy from either overseas or from a supplier- not from private breeders.  Can someone please tell me what you do with your fishies?  Thanks!!!

You might try.... (none / 0) (#2)

contacting some smaller shops in your area. Sometimes the larger stores are under contract, or store policy, where there isn't any room to negotiate.

Another thing is to separate the males from the females as soon as you can determine their sex, which will be a while yet.  If they can't mate,
they can't have babies.

You can get usually 4-5 litters from just one mating, so keep this in mind.

So, good luck, and do as Cloe suggests, ENJOY!!

Dont worry (none / 0) (#1)

At this point do not worry about what to do with the baby guppies in 3 months. First you might not get a big drop (though we all pray to the guppy god on that one) and I have found that most pet stores will take the guppies though anywhere between .50-1.00 (sad I know but were not in it for the money!) and most likely if you speak with the manager can arrange for a free thing of food in exchange for the guppies, friends or relatives may have a tank that could use a little home grown guppy, there are options but a long road ahead. Get java moss or some kind of cover for the babies to hide in, get baby fry food for their little mouths and a heater to keep the water around 79'. Frequent water changes are needed too depending on the size of the tank...So there is alot that has to happen before now and then, sit back and enjoy - there is always Aquabid.com to sell overstock to other hobbists or maybe find a guppy club in your area to share with.
Long and short of it is ENJOY

Extra guppies (none / 0) (#3)

If you don't mind putting them up for sale in an auction, a number of fish clubs have them, especially in the spring and fall. If you live in a large metropolitan area these auctions are fairly common. Even regional centers in the countryside (population 20,000-100,000) often have terrific general clubs.

I've given a lot of guppies to various school teachers too. Before giving them any, ask how cold the school gets over weekends. (Too low a temperature in these money saving days and aquarium heaters can't keep up.)

When I had aquaria in one of my classrooms, I discovered not only that heaters were really needed (the 20 and 29 gallon tanks were more stable than the 10s) but because sometimes kids play with heater dials, submersible heaters (more expensive, but often more reliable) were necessary.

Another possibility is to put a low cost want ad in a local community paper or a freebie in one of those "shoppers".

If you belong to some sort of neighborhood association, local fraternal group or a religious community, sometimes their publications have room for a blurb like "free to a good home...." ;)
