Care Tips

Hi Everyone,

I am new to Guppylog and a new owner to guppies.  I have purchased over a dozen of guppies in the last 2 weeks in hopes of breeding and slowly they are dying on me.

The water is clear, the ph level is at 7.0, and the temp is at a steady 82F. I have tons of artificial plants for them.  Should I be using live plants?  If so, which ones?

What am I doing wrong?  Any help with my problem would be much appreciated!

Have you figured out why your water temperature is so high?

Have you lost anymore guppies?  :-(

Did you  get a chance to check out "unclescotts" story about local fish stores, and how to pick out some clues on the bad ones?

Where do you stand right now, and what solutions have you thought of?

If you need anymore help, or have anymore questions, post a reply to this, OK?

:-)

Check water for ammonia and nitrite.

How big is your tank?

If it is new, do you have any established ones that you can swipe some water or gravel from?

Let us know what your water readings are, and turn down the temp a bit.

If you haven't done a water change in the last 24 hours do a 20% change, asap.

:-)

Temp level (none / 0) (#4)

Thanks guppygirl for your advise and suggestions.  Being new to owning an aquarium, I did not purchase a heater.  Will purchasing a heater help me with keeping the temp at a constant 72?

I did a water change lastnight and put in the recommended solution for removing ammonia and nitrites and keeping the feedings to very small amounts.

I would like to replenish my guppies that have died, but I am so scared that I will kill them again.  What is the best way for me to fill up my 10 gallon tank with guppies?

Temperature Readings (none / 0) (#5)

A heater is used for raising the temperature, or keeping it from going too low, not too high.

Yours is too high, we need to cool it off somehow.

I first like to figure out why your tank is at 82 degrees without a heater.
Where are you located?
Is the tank near a heat source, or in direct or close to direct sunlight?
When you do a water change, do you use tap water, or "aged water"?
I think there are devices that cool the water, but I'll have to look those up since I have never needed one, and don't know how they work.

Maybe someone will read this that knows, and can tag on some info.

We should be able to get your tank back up soon and full of happy guppies if we can figure out why the other ones have died, so don't despair.

I asked you some other questions in your "How do I know" posting. Please answer both sets of questions, I did answer a few myself reading this
posting.

Agreed with above. (none / 0) (#3)

Though, I'd suggest a water temp of around 72.

Water Temp (5.00 / 1) (#7)
by GuppyAdict on Tue Sep 02, 2003 at 04:07:00 PM PST

Hi Scott,

I can't seem to get my water any lower then 78.  I live 10 minutes from the beach, so it is pretty cool in my house when I'm home and have all the windows open. I put my aquarium away from the windows and sunlight.  It does get a little warm during the day when I am at work, since I do not have any windows open.  But even when I'm home with all the windows and fans on it doesn't get any lower then 78.  What can I do?  This was suppose to be a nice relaxing hobby for me, but it has actually been pretty stressful and upsetting these past 2 weeks.

78 is fine. (none / 0) (#8)

I said no LOWER than 72.  Try for no higher than 84, 86 or so.  78 is FINE.  :-)
