Proper Filter Cleaning

I think I figured out my problem.  Although I've been doing my routine water changes and gravel siphons and plastic plant cleanings and filter changes, I never really looked inside the filter.

It's only about a year old, and I've been rinsing off the tube that goes inside the tank but never looked inside.  I noticed tonight that not as much water is going back and forth through the filter as what it used to do.  I took it apart and OH MY GOSH!!!  That was totally disgusting!!!  There are tiny notches inside the tube that the water goes through and that was what was partially clogged.  I wonder if that was one of my main issues...

where the tube goes in, that also comes apart and should be cleaned. this should be done every other month at least.

It's all good now though, so far at least.  I boiled the decor in the tank too.  The fish are actually acting much more active since I cleaned the filter yesterday.  Must be like getting a breath of fresh air 8)
