FAQs in brief

So you've found Guppylog and want to ask a question or just have something to say?

Use the Post a Log Entry link for asking questions or providing information that is detailed and about Guppies. Do not use this for short submissions and especially do not use this for asking "is my guppy pregnant?" or "when is she going to drop", questions we get asked many times. We expect an attempt be made to use correct spelling, punctuation and grammar here. We prefer that you have done some degree of searching for an answer (via the Search link, the Google search link or Immediate Help) and then use this for further clarification.

When information is posted this way (or a question asked), that post can then be found in the Moderate Log Entries queue. This is where any guppylog member can vote on your submission to go to the Front Page, Section only or dump it entirely. So far we have been pretty generous with newbies and allowed things through without dumping. You will often find answers to your questions provided here before the voting is finished so be sure to check back.

Post a Diary should be used for everything else. Most one or two paragraph questions on guppies are best placed in the diaries. Use it for non guppy things or for short items. Use it for your ramblings even. Rather than post a new diary each day about similar items, try to add to one you have already created as it makes it easier for the rest of us to follow. Start a new diary when the main topic changes. Diary entries do not have to be guppy related and in fact do not even have to be fish related. There is no voting on this.

Most of the entries we see here belong in the diary section and NOT on the Front Page

I was asked to write this paragraph graciously but don't know how. So to put it bluntly :)
THINK about the fact this is a guppy site that has been running for years and THINK how many times your question may have already been asked and THINK about how many times we may have answered it and then THINK about whether or not it should get to the Front Page which would be the first view of guppylog most people would get. Then ask yourself "Should this really be a diary entry?"

Do NOT start both a diary entry and a Log entry about the same topic. If you are unsure where to put something, make it a diary and then you won't get dumped. It is possible that if someone here really thinks what you have said is Front Page material you might be asked to resubmit as a Log Entry.

If you are new to fish keeping, or to this site, let us know so we can welcome you on board. Guppylog is a community-edited (mostly) site, if your story doesn't get posted to the "Front Page", learn from it, and try again. If you discover your submission gone from the queue and not on the front page, you can find it by clicking the "Everything" link at the top of the page.

*Pick your topic carefully!!! Try your best to match it to your story.
*Please DON'T use "HELP ME!!", "I NEED HELP!!", or "SICK FISH!!" as a Subject Line. Try something like, "I'm new here, and I need advice about fry."
*Entries in all capitals will be deleted - it is the equivalent of shouting and not necessary
*Include as much pertinent information as possible! (ie: water temperature, pH, nitrite and ammonia readings)
Help us help you by telling us relative information such as:
*How long has the tank been set up?
*What are the appearance, and age of your fish, or when purchased (were they acclimated?)
*What have you done so far? How often do you do partial water changes?
*What other species are in the tank?

PLEASE USE THE PREVIEW BUTTON BEFORE SUBMITTING!

Check over your article for misspellings, unclear wording, and missing information, please! Now, post away, and please remember to tell us if we were able to help you!!!! And don't forget to go back and read the detailed FAQs.

Comments are used for replying to either the originator of the entry (Post a Comment link) or to other comments (Reply to This link). Whilst still in the Moderate queue comments can be made editorial or topical. Editorial comments will appear with a red box around them when previewed and should only be used for editorial purposes eg. ask the person to correct their spelling and grammar. Editorial comments are only visible to registered guppylog users, visitors to the site will not be able to see them.

Comments can also be rated. This can be useful when you look up a user and choose to read all the comments rated "important" or "interesting" by that person.

Immediate Help is a selection of the most informative entries and was created as a means of quickly finding those best links. I would suggest reading every link here as you may find something useful.
