We've had accounts of fry in power filters before (none / 0) (#2)
by unclescott on Sun Aug 26, 2007 at 08:10:01 PM PST

and I began to feel one time that box filters were designed to take fry to a safe place. And there was also the time a dozen Aphyosemion were sheltering under the UG filter plate and avoid the predatory types above the gravel. ;)

Your speculation about veggie bits getting in there makes some sense. Good thing guppies are omnivores. Though if a fish, which is largely vegetarian, is really hungry and gets a chance to suck down a baby guppy - it will. And keepers when returning from vacation, have found the plants in a tank of carnivores have been pretty chewed up.

I think that tiny bits of flake food also get pulled all over until a fine mesh stops them. Additionally there are all sorts of microscopic critters (rotifers, protists and the like) on gravel, especially on plants, occasionally in the water column and quite likely under the gravel and within the filters. If beneficial bacteria can live there, why not creatures a little higher up the ladder? :)

What brand and model of canister filter is the fry saver?

They probably weren't lice. Tiny crustaceans (none / 0) (#5)

or what used to be called "infusorians" - which could be crustaceans, protists or some other semi-microscopic critters is more likely. At any rate they would probably be down the food chain from the guppies.

By the way, it is better to respond to a statement under it. That way people can better understand the sequence of comments. Otherwise the whole thread becomes pretty hard to follow and people lose interest. ;)
