Wow! Your wisteria and Java moss seem (none / 0) (#1)
by unclescott on Thu Mar 15, 2007 at 06:23:24 PM PST

to be especially taking off! Are you in a position to plant the trimmings? That growth is very impressive. What are the broad-leaved plants to the left. Are they blooming or throwing floating leaves?

What are you using to generate CO2 in your DIY unit? Is the second bottle an overflow so that nothing solid gets into the Aquarium?

There is a considerable difference in the lighting of the images between your first and later dates. Is that the camera or did you change the lighting? What kind of bulbs do you have now? How long do you leave it/them on?

Are you taking the photos with a tripod or just holding the camera (asks the guy who could transform a fruit bowl into an action shot)?

Thanks and all the best!

every time i've trimmed down the overgrowth i've tried to find someplace that seemed barren to plant the extra...good news is i'm running out of these places so i guess i'll have to start throwing it out or trying to get my lfs to take it...wisteria really explodes! i wish my bacopa would explode like that i got my java moss from a friend who just gave me a little pinch...all of this java moss started from something the size of a gumball the plant to the left that seems to be blooming is some sort of aponogeton...i'm considering cutting the blooms (since taking the pictures i've already cut the floating leaves since they were getting all tangled together and catching more food than my fish were eating)...do the blooms even serve a purpose? the second bottle for my co2 is an overflow bottle...i made the diyco2 just following most of the directions you'll see on the net...the second bottle is to keep sugar/yeast water out of the aquarium and aquarium out of the sugar yeast water...i use about 2 cups of sugar, 2 or more cups of water and a little bakers yeast...i used to try to be precise when mixing but as i've been going i realized it doesn't really make much of a difference as far as i can see so i pretty much just throw it all in together and give it a good shake (although i do give the yeast some tepid water and a pinch of sugar for 10 minutes by itself) and since running a stream of water through the co2 bell from my output nozzle my plants have taken off even more...and just the other day i changed the media in my filter and wow...did my water output skyrocket...it was really clogged in the canister...now when the water flows through the bell there are constantly tiny tiny bubbles being thrown down about 10 inches into the water which either absorb before reaching the surface, go back into the bubble, or are sucked into my intake tube...i'm happy with that setup i got the aquarium (30 gallon) originally from a friend who didn't need it anymore...it came with a fluval 304 and a hood light which is 3 feet long but the light is only 2 feet long...it looked too dark for me so i had (in the first pictures) 2 more 2 foot strips on top just to lighten it up a little bit...then i got the plants and thought this would be adequate but discovered that it was still way too dark...i needed something much brighter but didn't really have money to do anything like that (i had just spent all of my "fish money" on fluorite, plants, etc) so i went out and bought a 4 foot shop light and two lights with the highest color temperature i could find and ended up spending about $20 for all of it and my plants loved it...i think the bulb temp is 6500k and i leave them on 13 hours a day (all on a timer) i'm taking these pictures with my girlfriend's nice digital camera...i'm glad it's digital cuz i can download the pictures immediately and delete the 20 or so extra pictures i tried to get of my guppy while he kept swimming away from me i'm not sure what any of my guppies are...i've never bought any guppies with papers or anything...but i'm pretty sure that his mother has a black body and what i would call a fiery tail...i think the father might be this blue and yellow guppy...who knows though, they're all in the same community or i switch them up every now and then :) ok...enough typing for today...time for some march madness :)
