HELP dying fry =( | 3 comments (3 topical, editorial, 0 hidden)
I'm really sorry for what you and your guppies (none / 0) (#2)
by unclescott on Wed Feb 07, 2007 at 06:35:41 PM PST

have gone through. Is that breeding tank a separate aquarium or one of those obscenely little plastic floating boxes. (Guess that kind of tips my bias.) Those little boxes also have been called "the little plastic box 'o death." Female guppies all too often do die in them of a combination of shock and suffocation.

If it was a small 4-12 liter aquarium, that isn’t too bad for 10 fry for a little time. But it would be best if the tank was already cycled and had either an airstone or a small filter. Sponge filters work well with fry. Otherwise they really risk ammonia poisoning and (with their gills partly burned away by the ammonia) suffocation or attack by some disease.

I fear that something one of those two things happened to your fry. Without seeing them, we may never know for sure though.

We can “import” a cycle in part by bring some of the gravel from a cycled (usually 2 month old or older) aquarium. It is also wise to bring the water with the fish. And if something like a sponge filter can be run in the larger tank for a week or two, it can then be moved (wet) into the little aquarium, bringing its load of beneficial bacteria with it.

In larger aquariums we are wise to do a weekly partial (25-45%) water change, with treated (ideally seasoned) water of the same temperature. With tiny ones, they may need even more frequent partial water changes. And their size makes them difficult to heat unless there is water movement and one of those tiny (expensive) submersible heaters. Also the water chemistry can change very rapidly.

I would like to welcome you as a new Guppylog member. We have a lot of useful information which one can search for with the Google Search. Also in the upper right hand corner is a link to Immediate Help (for all of us). Click on either of the links.

If you are not as familiar as you would like to be with cycling an aquarium, please read through those discussions. Cycling is probably the most important thing a new aquarist must learn. And the hobby doesn’t do a very good job with that.

When you skim that first section in IH you will notice that, like almost all of us in our first post, you have submitted a diary (of a few paragraphs) where a log of 100s or 1,000s or even 10,000s of words go. Next time, submit these questions and observations as a diary and you will also get quicker responses.

The logs are voted upon and you may receive a few “mulligans” the first time around. Then after a submission, everyone will assume you know what a diary is. :)

I’m sure you will find the Immediate Help sections on # Breeding, # Pregnancy and Birth, # Fry Diet and Safety and # Food in General, useful.

All the best!
