it all depends on how many fry she has/is having. if the one at school you are comparing her to will have 22 fry and libby has 12 , then libby could look like the other female when she is 3 weeks in, instead of one.

number is also a factor as to how many will survive. if libby has 12, and each fish eats one before you can catch them, then you have 9 fry. a HUGE factor is if you plan to catch and save the fry or let them grow up with the adults. if you leave them and libby has 12, you might have 9, and you might have none. it all depends on your individual fishes. you should feed more frequently when your female is closer, so that all three of your fish aren't so hungry when the fry come. but if you have a male that picks on the two other fish, or is just all around crabby, i would be careful. same thing if your female is that way.

i think thats all i was going to say...good luck! and please, PLEASE....

 GET ATLEAST 2 MORE FEMALES!!!!

If Libby and the female(s) at school are (none / 0) (#5)
by unclescott on Thu May 04, 2006 at 02:13:05 PM PST

close in size, that is a pretty clever approach though. If there are size differences then Nancy's point is well taken and there are still differences in drops by females of the same length.

You had Libby two days now, so you don't know when she last dropped (not that the gups are that consistant at dropping 28-30 days anyway - just ask felix).

I guess we could agree that she isn't very far along in her pregnancy. I should have been more careful in noting that you had just purchased Libby. Didn't mean to be that nit-picky.

All the best!

I have to disagree. I've had females that were the same size and had VERY different drops I(see my much earlier post about 120+). One girl had a whole lot and the other only had 15. Same size same age and from the same drop, whereas another huge female I only got 1 gigantic fry from before she died.
