Re: Help Guppylog help you, and others (none / 0) (#1)

ok :). i voted, and will try to remember to do so each day. i really like this site. it's easy to find things, not very complicated to post on (although the system does take a little getting used to), and if you look at the IH before posting, the people here are overall very freindly ;).

as much as i like the idea of having more fish minds as resources, which means a more varied range of advice, i think we should look at the pros and cons of having a small online community Vs. a large online community.

with a large online community, there is more of a chance of the occasional sicko to log on. i know the mods here can handle a few, but as the community gets larger, so will the amount of sickos, and the poor mods will be racing to delete accounts and posts.

also, with more people joining, younger kids may start to enter the system, who know no better than to post personal info. address, full name, etc. add that with the sickos and you've got a recipe for disaster.

however, as i said before, the more people join, the more advice you'll get from a question. and the whole point of this site is to exchange information and tips from aquarist to aquarist.

with a small community, you have the opposite. less sickos, no small children. but less info.

although, if i do say so myself, i think alot of the experienced users here already give enough info (winks to unc).

i just thought i'd point that out. if you want an example of a good site gone haywire by too many users, check out www.neopets.com. i'm not sure if you can read their boards (forums) without joining, but if you can't, just create an account at 13 or older, and give a false email. you could give a true email, but i think you'll find the site pretty boring (as i've started to), so there's really no point. there are about 100 million users, and about 10 million are people who are just there to get on your nerves, or they'll start a board on how they should kill themselves or something. alot of people give personal info there too.

    guess that's it!

Okay, sorry to argue with you, but what kids will post depends entirely on their personal level of maturity.  I knew not to post my name, address, personal info, etc. when I was nine, while other people don't get that point until 17 (yes, I do know some).  I got my account when I was 12.  I still refuse to even put my email anywhere even if there is some huge, expansive privacy policy and a ton of writing that says "WE WILL NOT SHARE THIS WITH ANYONE".  I understand that there's no way of controlling and/or testing the maturity level of kids making accounts on this site, but that's just a point that I feel like I have to make.

All very valid points Nancy. At least with guppies we are unlikely to end up with that many people.
Some forums are just too big and too full of info if that makes sense. Still, as you said, we could do with a few more people here. It has been great to have some new faces here answering questions of late. I know I for one was getting pretty snappy at having to answer the same old questions over and over so I don't know how unc continues on. By the way, unc has a family wedding on this weekend so he won't be around much.

yes, new faces are pretty nice to see, atleast the ones that have common sense. you're right, not that guppies aren't wonderful to keep and have, a large number of people haven't yet discovered that yet ;).

it does sometimes seem that the words "immediate help" are immortalized on this site...but having the IH is alot more useful than having to repeat answers over and over and over.

i'm on holiday this weekend too (4 day weekend for us), so tomorrow will be my last day here until mon/tues.

Make no mistake though - all of those are very easily dealt with by the existing system.

Also, I monitor this site constantly. I'm a System Administrator at my day job, and usually not more than an hour goes by that I don't at least give the site a quick glance. I'm VERY concerned about the quality of the community that we're building, and that no one does anything stupid in the meanwhile.

We've been up for a while now, and haven't had a really serious problem yet. It may interest you to know that we already have more than 1000 users. Most of them just don't post.

well, if you beleive that the site is ready, i'm ready to support you. like i said, always nice to meet new "fish heads" as unc has previously called them ;).

1000 users? wow. i had no idea. only about 50 people post!

There are LOTS of people who visit here once, make an account, ask a question, get an answer, and are never heard from again. :-)

As long as we are at it, I would like to ask EVERYONE who has listed their REAL NAME on our Frappr site to please change it to your GUPPYLOG NICKNAME. Thank you.
