Re: On Food (none / 0) (#2)

Gosh,
There are a lot of foods around! Purina makes and packages foods in 50 pound bags for fish of all kinds. Their Trout Chow goes for about $30 for 50 pounds. I smash and grind it up for all my live bearers and lots of Guppies. It makes good food for the Grindal worms as well.

I remember my parents who trained their Poodle dog to eat only boiled beef. What a waste. This little dog went starving when we had to change his diet to regular dog food after Mom died. It took 2 weeks until he started eating again, but it came to pass.

Guppies are grazers, they will eat a little bit of everything provided to them. A little practice and observation on your part can train them to take just about everything. It could be a good time for you to learn to hatch Brine Shrimp cysts into Baby Brine Shrimp. WATCH them GO CRAZY!! There is nothing like it - well Grindal worms and Daphnia are crowd pleasers too.

Be patient and take a little of what you see and add it to the books you find at the Local Fish Store and/or on the web.

Good luck and happy fish keeping.

I got around to feeding (none / 0) (#6)
by unclescott on Wed Mar 08, 2006 at 01:14:44 PM PST

the small can of Nutrafin Max. Responses were mixed.

To the manufacturer's credit, they do have a date on the bottom of the package. It was sealed with foil, but it came off fairly quickly and I wonder if this was loose. The age of the product may relate to why some of the fussier fish haven't fallen all over themselves taking some of these flakes. On the other hand, we're not "cheating" and using a taste attractant with it.

Maybe I should try to get some garlic in solution and soak a couple of these flakes in it. In a week or so they will be used up anyway.

However those livebearers who shamelessly devour anything, really chow it down. Even a new pair of killies from the African Savanna (being baby-sat) do a pretty good job of taking it.

I'm trying to use up samples and other purchased foods before buying any others. It simply isn't fair to feed antique flake foods to the fish. :)

Budgie, this sample of one does suggest that other foods may be taken more enthusiastically. On the other hand, one should test feed products produced at about the same time. Different fishes will be attracted to different foods too.

All the best!
