Funny you would say that! Friends were teasing me I could teach my kids to swim in there! Haha!
I think my safest bet is going to be to bring someone in to check my foundation and see where my options are for placing it. While my basement would be the best place yes, it is just that, a basement. We use it for storage as it is unfinished.
I still have some time as I have nothing to put it in yet. It will be a month or two before I can get a filter and other equipment I will need to get this up and running. I wasn't quite prepared to get a tank this large, the price just wasn't passable!
So in the meantime I think I will paint the stand and cover, right now it's black, a little dark for me. And then as I can afford it I will slowly get ready to fill this puppy!

What a great hub! :)

I am far from one whom you should talk to about supporting that aquarium, but it will weight in at 3/4 of a ton to a ton. You are doing well to carefully consider where it will be placed because, except an emergency (God forbid), it will not be moved again for a very long time. :)

Don't know about letting them swim in the tank, but little kids and fish have some interesting interactions. Our then three-year-old daughter was sneaking some trout chow out of the bag and thoughtfully chewing upon it. No subsequent problems, but when I put her in the bathtub, she swam up stream. ;)
