Re: Thanks unc (none / 0) (#4)

Well, the 10 gallon tank has been running for just over 2 months now... For the first two weeks it was running with a side filter. Filled with:
a) Mechanical Foam Filter Insert
b) Activated Carbon Insert
c) Biological BioMax Insert

As well as the side filter I also placed an assortment of plastic plants, both floating and gravel weighted, and assorted live plants
Consisting of Hornwort and a few others and with them came the snails, two different kinds... All of the plants I once and a while give a dose of Plant Nutrient for freshwater.

So i'm pretty sure that the tank was cycled enough before I put the fish in, the two fish that I started with and tested with for two days are: Otocinclus Catfish. The two of them watched guppy, after guppy come and go, even though I used and used all treatments I could think of. I also use Waste control, an organic Waste Eliminator...

As for the chlorine and chloramines I used AquaPlus: Tap water conditioner... so I’m pretty sure that there levels are down if not non-existent... and since I removed all adult and store bought guppies I’ve since never lost a fish, so I’m sure its either a) the age of the fish, or b) the numerous diseases that are found in chain pet stores due to all their tanks on a central water circulation system...

So far though in the 33 gallon tank, I was using a bubble stick hooked up to the air pump. Though two nights ago I thought it may be making the extra bubbles gather as well, so I instead hooked up a larger side filter with all the same filter media as the 10 gallon, As I said about the bacteria additive used in that tank was Cycle: Reduces Fish Loss More Nitrofiers Keeps Aquariums Healthy Rapidly matures new aquariums. I also used the Chlorine, Chloramines remover in this tank as well...

In both tanks I Watch the PH levels and use PH Adjust up/down depending on levels in the tanks..

I had tried to look for the Edmonton fish club earlier, but I must have found an old page, because it didn’t seem active since fall. But I will look again, in hopes of finding a comrade

For the fish in the 33 gallon, I do like the schooling fish, especially the neon tetra's, but I mainly wanted it to be a grow out tank for the guppies, but if I get another tank in the future I might take the guppies there instead. And for the other tank mates, I'm definitely getting the ghost/glass catfish, because that’s what my girl friend likes, and a few female bettas as well for my daughter and my niece... So I’m definitely leaning more towards the fish that don’t fin nip...

The white clouds I think will fit nicely in there because I’ve never seen them to be much of the aggressor in my previous 20 gallon tank (which is still running in the north) and that was a pretty aggro set up... the ghost/glass catfish did quite well in that environment as well...

Well I guess that’s it for today. I’m just enjoying watching my Half Blacks grow up and am consistently watching for any hints of color on the 40 some odd fry.....

Suggestions for new tank (none / 0) (#6)
by New Guppy Momma on Tue Dec 05, 2006 at 07:46:48 AM PST

I have a few suggestions for your big tank. Go get a Dwarf Gourami. I know I know...just because I have 2 I think everyone needs one ;) They are beautiful fish tho. Especially if you have a big enough tank that 2 can live peacefully together. We have the odd "body slam" and they tend to chase each other and "box" with their feelers but on the whole they seem pretty content. They each have claimed their own territory and guard it from the other.
Also a few Neons would be a nice addition. I have 4 and am hoping to get a few more very soon. Maybe next week when Walmart gets their shipment in. Rasbora's would be pretty cool too. I have 3 and like the Neon's I'm hoping to get more next week as well.
In my experiance Neons and guppies can live in the same tank. And I think my neons are even attempting to spawn! I guess they never read where they aren't supposed to do that in harder water. I may in the not too distant future set up my 2nd 10 gallon for a flock of different kinds of Tetra's. There are some very pretty ones out there. And since I got my 2nd Dwarf Gourami I haven't been over run with baby guppies so my tank is getting lower on fish as I'm still giving them away to people.

I hope you can enjoy success with your fry. I know in my experiance that the fry do better in my tanks than their parents ever did. Good luck also on getting ahold of a "fish friend". I know I'd love to find someone here to talk too as my Hubby is tired of hearing about them.
Before all else fails....do a 25% water change ;)
