Also, the tank space.  I had my freakishly huge delta male in a quarantine tank and his tail became a bit tattered at the end.  I think it's because there wasn't enough space to swim with that huge thing behind him.  I've often thought about trimming his tail, it just looks so uncomfortable and cumbersome to swim with.
