Is it just me, or did the "no filter" thing make my ears perk?

What do you mean by not using your carbon filters?  Is it an underground filter you turned off, or is there another one you're not mentioning... or...?

If you have no filter on your tank, that's your explanation right there. o.o

I've been not using a filter for a while now, since the one I have was too powerful for a 1 gallon and a 5 gallon, and they never simultaneously died before in the three years I've had them. I thought carbon filters just sucked up poop, which I've been doing with a syphon.

How do you have the water moving in the tank?  And with no filter, how often do you change the water?
