Re: The HP is a temporary solution. (none / 0) (#7)

Wow! Those tanks are amazing! I am working towards having a tank even half as beautiful as those ones. I really like having live plants in my tank. The next step for me is to get a better bulb for my canopy if possible.
Most of the plants that have red color to them need high light I've been told and are harder to keep alive. I would also like to start looking for some nice moss/floor covering plants. The LFS I go to has some really nice larger plants, and some grasses.
But first, I need to get rid of this hair algae. I have a little regular algae on the side of my tank here and there, not  much though. But this hair stuff seems to spread fairly fast. I think on top of adding the hp to my tank, I will take the plants out individually and cut off any highly affected pieces, and give them an hp soak and then wash and return them to tank.
So from what I read this algae is caused by to much nutrients in the tank...not enough water changes and gravel vac. I currently do the water change every 5 days or so. And I do a light vac with each one. So I will try to bump that up to every 3 days or so for a bit and see if that helps as well. Also cut back of feeding a little.
And then as soon as I can get my car out of our driveway due to snow, I will go out and get an algaecide. We are due for more snow tonight though, *sigh*, so I think any trips will have to wait for the weekend.
Thanks for all the great info!

Wish me luck!

Cheers
