What you are doing is fine if your diligent with the water changes, but an easier way wold be to do a fishless cycle on the q-tank. 6 weeks is usually sufficient for quarantining new fish though I like to wait 2 months.
*BEFORE you buy fish make sure you understand what "Cycling" a tank means <- quoted from miskaral* ~Trying to make a difference one fish at a time~
