a chance to take a look at those Immediate Help items. If you Googled {Guppylog Hair Algae} you would get 100s of hits. (Don't bother with the search function here.) Miskairal is trying to sort out some of the more useful references.

Hair algae is a product of too much of something or some things in the tank. There is an imbalance. Also, the hair algae may not have much competition for those essential items all plants need in order to thrive. If we wish to get rid of it, we must address those issues.

That said, hair algae can be the sign of a fairly healthy tank and can indeed help improve water conditions. It provides habitat for micro-food which fry graze upon. It is a favorite place for "egg-hangers" to spawn upon. Fry and harassed females hide there

Like you, I still don't want the stuff in my tank. :)

Would you please respond to the following (mostly culled from one of the Immediate Help comments):

How frequent and how large are your partial water changes?

How many hours is your tank light on?

How many bulbs are in the tank light? What size are they?

Is there any sunlight which touches the tank in the afternoon or during the day?

What plants do you have in the tank to shade and absorb the nutrients which the algae would other wise be thriving upon?

Do you fertilize the tank in any way?

What kind of gravel do you have?

What is the character of your tap water? (Water departments - in the USA - make regular reports to the EPA. Citizens can ask for copies.)

Thanks and all the best!

I have an offer to make, largely a freebie. (none / 0) (#4)

However a response to the above is necessary or the offer may make no sense.

All the best!
