Question: How long should you leave a male and female together for breeding??? | 7 comments (7 topical, editorial, 0 hidden)
Re: Question: How long should you leave a male an (none / 0) (#7)

My personal experience suggests to me that success rates are lower than one might expect given how they seem to be always pregnant and having more babies.

I've had "contaminated" females produce 2 or 3 drops of fry before having batches that are consistent with the males present.

Some of the best "contaminated" fish I've had come from aquariumfish.net.  I've got some supposed "purple dragon" fish that came from their facility already pregnant.  I kept them without males to see what I got.  Wow!  I have two tanks of really colourful fish from solo mothers of a supposedly fixed strain.  Everything from reds, to blues, to purple, the occasional white (not albino!), silver and gold skinned fish.

Anyway, I think its best to assume that it might take 2 or 3 tries to start seeing fish from your "encouraged" pairs/trios.  Don't assume that the females will give in easily. :-)
