Protecting Fry from the Filter Monster | 3 comments (3 topical, editorial, 0 hidden)
The fry swim much differently than guppy fry (none / 0) (#3)
by maggie1270 on Fri Aug 12, 2005 at 05:13:12 AM PST

At first they would dart to a spot and then rest on the gravel or ornament they were swimming to.  Quick little buggers even at the beginning.  But they do appear to be strong swimmers and they are all growing at different speeds even in the same tank that they were born in.  The other day I noticed that some fry were VERY close to the intake and were not sucked in so I'm wondering if it's the smaller, weaker ones that are being sucked in.  I'm still checking it every other night before bed.  Last night I didn't find any (alive and in 1 piece anyway) so I'm hoping it's the stronger ones that are surviving.  I can see that they are chubby looking as well.

My LFS said that she would love my parrots even if they are not going to be stripped and dyed.  But since I'm moving in another month and a half, I don't know if they will be big enough to get rid of by then.

The parents are very agressive as well.  I have to constantly keep an eye on them when I'm gravel syphoning or even just regrounding the plants or they will tag team me!  So far it's only been a tiny sting from the smaller one, but I'm sure if the big one gets a hold it will definitely not tickle.

I'm contemplating bringing in an algae eater or something to try to keep the next batch #s down a bit.  Geez, they breed almost as much as guppies!  Not to mention until they lay eggs again they won't eat any of their fry so the odds of most surviving (minus the filter incidents) are great.
