It's hard to say. It could have been finrot. Did it look cottony? Did you do a fishless cycle on your new tank before you added any fish?

in the Immediate Help section at Angelhologram's (and Gabby Hayes') questions (20 Questions for new fish owners or owners of sick fish) one could provide info on their comments. You might also look at Columnaris in the Immediate Help section. A lot of fish in commercial channels are exposed to that. An outbreak is often triggered by too many fish, too quickly placed in a new aquarium. :(

Sorry to sound so negative about the new tank thing. A lot of us have gotten caught by that though. I really hope that is a wrong set of guesses on my behalf.

to respond or elaborate on your guppies' situation, this doesn't make much of a log entry and earns a no vote. Since we are trying to give new people a first time "Mulligan" because it is almost expected that they are not familiar enough with the site to know the difference between a short question in the Diary section and a several hundred word dissertation in the Logs, it is disappointing voting no, but there isn't much other choice.
