It's hard to say what they've died of. If they had gotten fat and their scales were sticking out, then it sounds like it could be dropsy. Weekly partial water changes and monthly gravel syphons will help prevent that. But then again, from what I've seen WalMart does not seem to supply the healthiest fish simply because they do not supply the best caretakers. Since you're acquiring a larger tank, use that 5 gallon as a quarrantine so that you don't affect the fish you alreay have.

I'd talk to the Walmart manager, by the way. Tell her or him that you enjoy abusive relationships with sales personel and that's why you love their pet department. ;)
